Facebook joined the online dating realm when it announced the launching of its new dating feature. Tinder could be in great danger now that the Social Media Giant will allow users to create a dating Profile on the platform. The user’s dating profile will be separate from their personal Facebook profile, and will only be visible to non-friends who also opted for the dating feature. The social network will find matches based on mutual interests and other preferences. Facebook will start testing the dating feature in late 2018.

In a statement from TechCrunch, Facebook explains, “potential matches will be recommended based on dating preferences, things in common, and mutual friends. They’ll have the option to discover others with similar interests through their Groups or Events.”

If online dating interests you, here’s how the new match-making feature will work:

• Create a dating profile using only your first name. Your dating profile will not be visible to your Facebook friends, and to people who don’t use the dating feature. Your dating profile will not show up in the Newsfeed as well.
• On the dating feature, you’re able to browse Events and Groups that match your interests. You can “unlock” one of these Events and Groups that you will use for dating. Once unlocked, you will be able to see other dating profiles who opened the same Group or Event.
• You can browse other people’s dating profiles where you will see a few of their photos, and some basic information about them. You will stumble on dating users that you have mutual friends, similar interests, and other valuable information made available by Facebook.
• If you find a dating user who’s also interested, you can begin an online chat that’s separate from Messenger and Whatsapp. For safety purposes, exchange of texts is only available for now.

Even before dating apps emerged, thousands of marriages and romantic relationships began through Facebook. Unlike other apps like Tinder that focus mainly on quick hookups, Facebook’s dating feature has a more significant chance when it comes to long-term serious relationships.

Investors believe that Tinder is at risk now that its parent company, Match Group, dropped 17 percent after Facebook announced its dating feature.

FaceDate, which is the new dating feature has been receiving tons of questions since the announcement. One primary concern says, would the social giant be able to set clear boundaries between social media and as a dating tool. Not everyone will appreciate using the same platform for everything, especially when it comes to building romantic relationships. Facebook may face bad reputations when the users encounter bad experiences through the dating feature.

Nonetheless, Facebook Chief Product Officer, Chris Cox believes that match-making fits the social media giant due to its availability, varied information, and for being a reliable platform for identity.
