Remembering D-Day

The day (June 6, 1944) in World War II on which Allied forces invaded northern France by means of beach landings in Normandy. Initially planned on June 5, 1944, the allied landing in Normandy had been postponed and finally occurred on June 6th in 1944 because of a storm in the English Channel. General Eisenhower gave the start to this big-scale operation which code name is “Operation Overlord”. About 160,000 soldiers crossed the sea for this operation. The German officers didn’t expect a landing in Normandy. On the contrary, they were convinced that the Allies would land in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Many conditions had to be joined to permit the success of the landing: full-moon for the crossing, darkness during the approach phase and sunrise for the attack. In the Bay of Seine, only 3 days a month guarantee these conditions. The Landing of June 6, 1944 remains a historic day thanks to the success of the combination of air and maritime operations.
