How to measure your websites growth

Let’s face it Statistics and analysis is a boring job for many, however, it is still important to monitor your websites performance from a variety of angles.  Keeping track of your blogs progress is important to see if your current strategies are working or if they are need of an update.

In this article, I am going to show you what you will want to keep track of to ensure your website is getting the results that you really want and need.  After all, this is the main reason you have a website right?  To achieve a business goal and help you get a return on your investment.

Website statistics and Analysis

Here are the most important statistics that you will need to keep a track of to make sure that your website is performing as it should be.  I would suggest you record these statistics in a Spreadsheet once a month to record your results.

RSS and Mailing List Subscribers

One thing every website master wants is subscribers, the change in your Number of subscribers shows whether your recent content has been resonating with your audience.  If you haven’t already, be sure to

Blog posts and guest blog posts

The number of posts you do on your website and on other sites can have a huge effect on your websites overall growth.  Make sure to note down both in your tracking spreadsheet, after several months you may notice a correlation between the growth and decline in your stats based on these numbers alone.

Twitter followers

Keep a track of your growing twitter community by taking a note of your follower count when you sign in to your twitter account.

Facebook fans, post views and post feedback

If you have a Facebook fan page, you can check your page insights (which can be found if you select the “more” button) You’ll be able to view statistics for the number of lifetime likes, post views and post feedback during a specified date range.

Klout

You can connect your Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and other information to Klout to get an overall influence score which will take into account your activity on each network that you connect to their service.  Influence is based on a number of metrics including the retweets, comments, likes etc you get on anything you share on your networks.  The Klout score can be a good indicator or whether you are growing your influence as your website grows.

YouTube subscribers and views

If yo have a YouTube channel, note down your subscribers and total number of views to see if your videos are working with your YouTube audience.

Unique visitors, visits, page views and bounce rate

Personally I use Clicky for all of my website analytics, I know that Google analytics is the preferred industry choice but I find Clicky to be miles better at reporting accurate real-time statistics and it is really easy to use over the clunky, cumbersome user interface of Google analytics.  But what ever system you use to gather your analytics you are going to need to note down the above-mentioned stats to see your websites process as far as traffic goes.

Domain authority, total links and linking root domains.

MOZ offers free access to its toolbar which you can download as an add-on for Google Chrome and Mozilla Firefox.  You will need to create a free account with MOZ to use the tool bar, but using their tool you will be able to grab your website’s Domain Authority score, the total amount of links and linking root domains.  By recording these stats it will help you see your growth in terms of the number of sites linking to you and your authority score within your niche.

Your website growth measurement spreadsheet

I thought I’d share my own growth website growth measurement spreadsheet to give you an idea of how to setup and store the data collected from the above statistics.  You will need to have a Google+ account to access the spreadsheet.  Here is the link.

If you prefer to have a local copy of the spreadsheet then, by all means, download a copy.
