A few months back, hundreds of thousands of students in the Nation Capital Region of India — among 2,500,000 nationally— took their Grade 10 or Grade 12 CBSE Board Exams. Everyone, including the students, teachers, and parents prepared meticulously for subjects like math, science, history, Sanskrit and many more. But the important question to ask here is – to achieve what ends? 

As educational practitioners, we believe that the Indian Board examination system is making our students increasingly less competent to participate on an international stage. To put it precisely, this is a systemic failure that has long-term academic, economic and political impacts. Strong focus on memorisation-based learning is leaving India’s most important demographic dividend ill-equipped in 21st century skills such as critical thinking, creative expression and effective communication — the very pillars that are driving global space of creative destruction and innovation.
