1. First organized census for Indus Dolphins begins in India

The Punjab Government along with WWF-India started conducting the first organized census for the conservation of Indus Dolphins, which are one of the world’s rarest mammals.

Indus dolphins are only found in the restricted area of 185 km stretch between the Talwara and Harike Barrage in Beas river in Punjab.

Punjab and WWF – India are working as two teams according to official news from the Department of Forest and Wildlife Preservation.

Over the five days exercise both the organizations will come to an estimate regarding the dolphin population.

2. GIS technology to strengthen Namami Gange Programme

The board Survey of India, the old scientific department in the country set up in 1767, took over the National Mission Clean Ganga and now using GIS Technology to facilitate the Ganga rejuvenation task.

NMCG aims to strengthen planning and implementation at national/state/local level, through the project which has been approved in the EC Meeting. This project has an estimated cost of INR 86.84 crore.

DEM (Digital Elevation Model) technology is included in this project which ensures the accurate data collection. It is an important aspect of river basin management planning.

DEM technology authorizes identification of entire topography of an area. Through this, it becomes easy for policy makers to analyze the available data to support the decision-making process

3. A special women coach introduced by Hyderabad Metro:

A special coach for women has been introduced by the Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited in metro train.

HMRL Managing Director N V S Reddy and L&T Metro Rail (Hyderabad) Limited MD and CEO K V B Reddy launched this exclusive coach for women.

4. SWIFT India Regional Conference 2018:

SWIFT India and Subcontinents Regional Conference 2018 is organized to explore key issues in the nation’s financial market development such as innovation, digitization and minimizing the digital gap.

The event will be hosted in Mumbai.

 

 

5. India at 4th rank in Asia-Pacific on power index:

India has achieved 4th rank out of 25 nations in the Asia-Pacific region on the basis of overall power measurement index.

Power is measured across 25 countries and their territories in Asia-Pacific region by the Lowy Institute Asia Power Index.

6. Inauguration of 3rd Edition of UNPCAP held in New Delhi:

To build and enhance the capacity of the African Troop Contributing Countries to the UN, the third edition of UNPCAP was inaugurated in New Delhi on 7th May 2018.

The course was organized by the Centre for United Nations Peacekeeping in India (CUNPK) in partnership with the US.

The 1st and 2nd session of the UNPCAP were held in 2016 and 2017 respectively, now the 3rd session will be held from 7th to 25th May 2018.

7. Conference for CEO’s of Smart Cities inaugurated in Bhopal:

The “First Apex Conference for the CEOs of Smart Cities” has been inaugurated in Bhopal by Shri Hardeep Puri, Minister of State (I/C) for Housing & Urban Affairs.

Since the launch of Smart Cities Mission on 25th June 2015, has been one of the most transformation urban mission.

It was a two-day conference which was organized on 8th – 9th May 2018 for providing a platform for learning and knowledge sharing among the Smart City CEOs.

8. India hosted the15th Asia Media Summit:

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India along with the Indian Institute of Mass Communication (IIMC), New Delhi and Broadcast Engineering Consultants India Limited (BECIL) were hosted the 15th Asia Media Summit (AMS) 2018 from 10th to 12th May 2018 in New Delhi.

Smriti Zubin Irani, Union Minister for Information & Broadcasting and Textiles was presented as the Chief Guest in the inaugural ceremony of the Summit on 10th May 2018.

India hosted this event for the first time.

This summit has been organized in two parts Pre-summit workshop (8th–9th) and Summit (10th-12th) with the theme “Telling Our Stories – Asia and More”.

9. Kovind becomes first President to visit Siachen in 14 years:

Shri Ram Nath Kovind, the President of India, visited Siachen Base Camp on 10th May 2018 and becomes the first president to visit Siachen in 14 years.

Kovind also visited the Kumar Post.

P.J. Abdul Kalam is the first president of India who visited the Siachen Base in April 2004.

10. India’s First Smart Cities Control Centre launched in Madhya Pradesh:

Country’s first Integrated Control and Command Centre (ICCC) has been launched by the Madhya Pradesh Government for all seven smart cities of the state in Bhopal.

To monitor the status of various smart civic amenities using sensors the ICCC will enable the authorities.

SCM includes Bhopal, Indore, Ujjain, Gwalior, Jabalpur, Satna and Sagar seven smart cities in Madhya Pradesh.

11. Union Minister for Civil Aviation inaugurates 6th US-India Aviation Summit:

Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Suresh Prabhu inaugurated the 6th US-India Aviation Summit in Mumbai.

Ministry of Civil Aviation and US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) organize the biennial Summit jointly.

It is a technical, commercial and policy forum.

12. “India and the World: A History in Nine Stories” Exhibition:

The President, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts, (IGNCA), Shri. Ram Bahadur Rai inaugurated mammoth exhibition on Indian Civilization on 5th May 2018, first of its kind at National Museum, New Delhi.

It marked as an exceptional exhibition of its own type, collaboration with the British Museum, London; National Museum, New Delhi; and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (CSMVS), Mumbai.

Culture Ministry also actively supported it.

13. Six-Day Festival of Bharat hosted in Delhi:

A six-day festival of Bharat is being hosted by Delhi from 9th to 14th May 2018 as a 21st century tribute to the majesty and depth of India’s civilization.

This festival is being held at the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts (IGNCA).

Scholars, Grammy award winning artists, rising new stars and prominent public figures will also be attending this event.

14. World’s second oldest rock discovered in Odisha:

The world’s second oldest grain of magmatic zircon from Champua from Singhbhum rock sample in Odisha’s Kendujhar district has been discovered. It is approximately 4,240 million years old rock.

15. Green license plates approved by Government for e-vehicles:

The Government has approved the green license plates for private e-vehicles with white fonts and for taxis, said by Union Minister Nitin Gadkari.

The official notification will be out in a week’s time.

16. Joint Exclusively Economic Zone (EEZ) Surveillance of the Maldives:

To undertake joint EEZ surveillance of the Maldives from 9th to 17th  May 2018, as part of Indian Navy’s ‘Mission Based Deployments’, deployed Indian Naval (IN) ship Sumedha and a Naval Offshore Patrol Vessel (NOPV).

An Operational Turnaround (OTR) at Male has been undertaken by the ship from 11th to 12th May 2018, during this ship would interact and impact training to Maldives’ National Defence Force (MNDF) personnel.

From 12th to 15th May 2018 Sumedha would also embark MNDF personnel onboard and undertake joint EEZ surveillance.

On completion of the EEZ surveillance, the MNDF personnel would be disembarked.

17. Mumbai to be the venue for RBSM India on 15th May:

The two-day second RBMS (Reverse Buyers Sellers Meet) will be inaugurated by the Commerce Secretary of the Government of India, commencing in Mumbai from 15th May 2018, to promote the export of mangoes and other tropical fruits and products.

The APEDA Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, in association with the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry is organizing the meet.

18. Chief of Army Staff released a Book:

The book “Across the Bench – Insight into Indian Military Judicial System” written by Lt Gen Gyan Bhushan, former Army Commander and Member ‘A’, Armed Force Tribunal, Lucknow Bench was released by the Gen Bipin Rawat who is the Chief of Army Staff.

This book is on military judicial system regarding command and management issues.

1. China will organize film Festival in Kolkata:

A film festival will be organized by the China in Kolkata in the month of July this year.

It is a week-long film festival which will be organized at the film and cultural centre Nandan in Kolkata.

In this film festival, seven Chinese films will be screened.

2. Vice President on a three-nation visit:

Vice President of India M. Venkaiah Naidu reached Guatemala on Sunday which is the part of his three nations visit to Latin America.

Vice President is on a visit of five days to Latin America’s Guatemala, Peru and Panama started from 6th May 2018.

This is the first overseas visit of vice president after joining office last year.

It is expected that a range of bilateral issues including the strengthening of institutional mechanisms for political interactions, Multilateral matters, trade and commerce, investments, information technology, capacity building, traditional medicines, space, defence, and culture will be discussed during his visit.

 

 

3. World Robot Conference will be held in Beijing:

The World Robot Conference 2018 will be held from 15th to 19th August 2018 in Beijing.

Over 12,000 competing teams and 50,000 candidates will participate in this event from more than 10 countries.

A robot competition will be held during the conference where participants will compete in five categories.

 

4. First SCO Tourism Ministers’ conference held in China:

The first conference of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization Tourism Ministers was held in Wuhan, China.

J. Alphons, India Minister of State for Tourism attended that conference.

A joint action plan which will serve as guidelines for tourism cooperation between SCO member states was approved by the meeting.

 5. Inauguration of India Pavilion done at Cannes Film Festival:

India Pavilion was inaugurated at the Cannes Film Festival 2018, France.

The Indian delegation consisted of H.E. Vinay Mohan Kwatra, Ambassador of India to France was presented at the time of inauguration and it is hosted by noted actor Shri Sharad Kelkar.

To showcase diversity in films of the country was the agenda of the Indian delegation this year while furthering collaborations with various other companies.

Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) | Get the Best Information Out of Top Agreements

1. Google and NITI Aayog signed SOI to help grow Artificial Intelligence in India:

NITI Aayog and Google have signed a memorandum i.e. SOI to help in the foster growth of AI and ML (Machine Learning) ecosystems. They work together on a range of initiatives to build the AI ecosystem in all over India.

Anna Roy, Advisor, NITI Aayog and Shri Ranjan Anandan, Vice President, India and South East Asia, Google signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) in the presence of Shri Amitabh Kant, CEO, NITI Aayog.

To conduct research and development in frontier technologies such as AI, the NITI Aayog has been assigned the responsibility to set up a national programme.

To enable the wide deployment and use of AI, NITI Aayog has been developing India’s national strategy on AI along with the National Data and Analytical Portal.

2. The Government of India signed a loan deal with the World Bank:

The Government of India signed a big loan deal with the World Bank, worth of $200 million for the National Nutrition Mission. This loan has been taken to reduce stunting from 38.4% to 25% in children 0-6 years of age by the Government of India till the year 2022.

The Prime Minister of India launched the POSHAN (PM’s Overarching Scheme for Holistic Nourishment) Abhiyan on 8th March 2018 at Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan.

Gradual scaling up of the interventions are involved by a large component of POSHAN Abhiyan supported by the ongoing World Bank assisted ICDS Systems Strengthening and Nutrition Improvement Project (ISSNIP) to all districts in the country over a 3-year period.

This loan will support the first phase scale up to 315 districts across all states and union territories (UTs).

3. MOU is signed between Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India APCPL:

Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India(ALIMCO), under Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment and Aravali Power Company Pvt Ltd (APCPL), Jhajjar signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) at Jhajjar, Haryana.

As per this MOU, INR 2 Crore allotted for Distribution of Aids and Assistive Devices to Persons with Disabilities in Charkhi Dadri, Haryana in the presence of Shri D.R. Sarin, CMD, ALIMCO and Shri N.N. Mishra, CEO, APCPL.

Artificial limbs, aids & appliances such as Motorized Tricycles Tricycle, Wheel Chairs, BTE Hearing Aids, Crutch Axilla Adjustable, Braille Cane, MSIED Kit, Braille Kit, Smart Cane, Smart Phones etc. will be distributed in these camps to the persons with disabilities.

Banking Awareness & Economics Current Affairs | Understand the Top Trends in India

1. GSTN turning into a government entity approved by GST Council:

GST Network has been approved as a government entity by taking over stakes held by private entities by the GST Council. It is said by the Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in the 27th meeting of the council.

The central government owns 24.5% GSTN currently and state governments also hold the same percentage collectively.

The remaining 51% is with five private financial institutions – HDFC Ltd, HDFC Bank Ltd, ICICI Bank Ltd, NSE Strategic Investment Co and LIC Housing Finance Ltd.

2. India slips over 6th position in Business Optimism Index:

India slipped to the sixth position globally in the business optimism index with a score of 89 for the first quarter of this year.

 With business sentiment, India is at the “weakest” in four years.

Australia, Finland, Indonesia, the Netherland and the US are taken place in Biz optimism index as top five nations respectively.

3. 77% Stake acquired by Walmart in Flipkart:

77% shares of Flipkart group will be acquired by the world’s largest retailer Walmart for $ 16 billion.

Remainder shares will be held by the Binny Bansal co-founder of Flipkart and other shareholders.

Flipkart co-founder Sachin Bansal and Japan’s Soft bank to exit Flipkart by selling their stake to Walmart.

 

 4. India’s raised at 7.3% in 2018 according to ADB:

President of Asian Development Bank (ADB), Takehiko Nakao said that India’s growth would raise up to 7.3% in 2018.

China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations region are expected to grow by 6.6% and 5.2% respectively.

5. India will become world’s fastest growing economy in coming 10 years:

India takes first place in the list of the world’s fastest growing economies for the coming decade.

According to Harvard University report, projected that India economy is projected to grow at 7.9% annually, ahead of US and China.

As per the Centre for International Development at Harvard University (CID), the countries that have diversified their economies into more complex sectors will grow the fastest in the coming decade.

6. Water-Security Programme Launched by Yes Bank:

Under “Livelihood and Water Security” CSR initiative, Yes Bank is ready to launch a capacity building project with farmers in Haryana and Rajasthan.

The aim of this initiative is to improve farmers’ access to finance, imparting good agricultural practices and ensuring effective use of digital banking.

1. NASA launches its latest Mars mission:

NASA has launched its latest Mars spacecraft, Insight, which designed to perch on the surface and listen for “Marsquakes” ahead of an eventual human mission to explore the Red Planet.

The aim of this project to expand human knowledge about the interior conditions of Mars and reveal the information that how rocky planets are formed billions of years ago such as Earth.

The lander should be settled on the Red Planet on 26th November 2018 if all goes as planned.

Its name, Insight is the short form of Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport. Jim Green, the NASA chief scientist, said that Mars has quakes, avalanches and meteor strikes already known by the experts.

2. SpaceX aborted the launch of the first commercial launch of updated Falcon 9 rocket in Florida:

The launch of the first commercial flight of an updated Falcon 9 rocket has been aborted by the SpaceX.

Due to an unspecified glitch, the countdown was halted in the final stage of the launch sequence.

3. Arunachal’s biggest solar plant Inaugurated:

The state’s biggest solar power plant at the Energy Awareness Park was inaugurated by the CM Pema Khandu of Arunachal in the presence of Power Minister Tamiyo Taga.

An estimated investment of INR 8.50 crore was done on this plant.

The burden of energy bills will be reduced by this new plant on the state, said by APEDA director Marki Loya.
