National – Across the India:

1. The 10th edition of the Jaipur Literature Festival (JLF) has begins at the historic Diggi Palace, Jaipur, Rajasthan jointly by Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje, veteran lyricist Gulzar, American poet Anne Waldman and spiritual writer Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev.

 The theme of the 10th edition of JLF is The Freedom to Dream India at 70.

 JLF is considered as the ‘Greatest Literary Show on Earth’.

 The five -day event would see the participation by over 250 authors, thinkers, politicians, popular culture icons, speakers, connoisseurs, book lovers among others

2. The Gujarat government declared a monthly salary hike of up to 124 per cent for its fixed-wage employees.

 The government made the announcement even as its appeal before the Supreme Court against a Gujarat High Court verdict dismissing the policy of hiring employees on fixed wages remained pending.

 Making the announcement, Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel said the salary hike would be effective from February 1 and it would benefit more than 1.8 lakh employees. The move would cost a financial burden of Rs 1,372 crore on the state exchequer.

3. President Pranab Mukherjee will inaugurate the 28th Dantan Gramin Mela in West Midnapore district in West Bengal.

 He is on a four-day visit to West Bengal.

 The fair will display the rural handicraft skills of the people of the region. The different goods ranging from textile to terracotta will be on display.

4. Indian Institute of Bombay is set to build a ‘Research Park’ for start-ups, and set up R&D centres in the institute for promoting entrepreneurship. The development will help students get an industrial exposure into real-world applications of their chosen fields.

 IIT-B’s Desai Sethi Centre for Entrepreneurship has received a generous fund of Rs 6 crore from Syntel co-founders Bharat Desai (1975 IIT B alumnus) and Neerja Sethi under the aegis of the DS Foundation (Desai Sethi Family Foundation).

5. More than 3.81 lakh consumers and 21,000 merchants have been declared winners of NITI Aayog ‘s lucky draw schemes ‘Lucky Grahak Yojana, (LGY) for consumers and ‘Digi-Dhan Vyapar Yojana, (DVY) for merchants.

 The winners were declared at 24 Digi-Dhan Melas held both daily and weekly across the country. Delhi, Ludhiana, Panaji, Lucknow, Jammu, Bengaluru and Hyderabad were among cities in which the events were held.

 The winners come from various walks of life, and include small farmers, Anganwadi workers, and homemakers. Active participation has been seen among men and women, and the majority of the winners are between 21 and 30 years old.

International – Across the Globe:

1. Donald Trump, a real estate mogul and reality television star who upended American politics and energized voters angry with Washington, will be sworn in Friday as the 45th president of the United States, putting Republicans in control of the White House for the first time in eight years.

 Ebullient Trump supporters flocked to the nation’s capital for the inaugural festivities, some wearing red hats emblazoned with his “Make America Great Again” campaign slogan. But in a sign of the deep divisions Trump sowed during his combative campaign, dozens of Democratic lawmakers were boycotting the swearing-in ceremony on Capitol Hill.

2. The World Economic Forum and the UCSB’s Marine Science Institute have announced a partnership to improve health of world’s oceans and maritime resources.

 The new partnership aims to protect world’s USD 2.5 trillion ocean economy.

 This partnership will harness the potential of public-private cooperation and the fourth industrial revolution to help the international community meet the ocean sustainable development goal.

3. India may assist the United Arab Emirates in developing its air defence system and repairing defence equipment to enhance its life cycle, besides providing offshore patrol vehicles as the Gulf country hopes to expand ties beyond its traditional partner Pakistan.

 Robust defence ties is a key pillar of Comprehensive Strategic Partnership that India and the UAE plan to conclude during Crown Prince Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s visit to Delhi as the chief guest for the Republic Day.

 India sees the UAE as one of its main destinations for arms exports in the future.

Economics & Banking GK:

1. Mortgage lender HDFC Ltd on Thursday slashed the Lending Rate by 0.15 per cent for its existing customers.

 The company has reduced its retail prime lending rate (RPLR) by 0.15 per cent with effect from today, HDFC Ltd said in a statement.

 The reduction in RPLR will also be applicable on loans to Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)/PIO’s card holders.

 It had already reduced the lending rate for new borrowers earlier this month. Interest rate on loans up to Rs 75 lakh was reduced to 8.7 per cent per annum, while for higher amount it came down to 8.75 per cent.

Appointments & Resignations:

1. Delhi Police commissioner Alok Kumar Verma, a 1979 batch Indian Police Service officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, has been appointed the director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), an official said on Thursday.

 His appointment as the CBI director is his 24th posting in his 36-year career as a police officer. Though originally slated to retire on July 31 this year, Verma will get a fixed tenure of two years as the CBI chief.

Sports:

1. Former India cricketers Bishan Singh Bedi and Farokh Engineer are expected to be named in a six-member panel by the Supreme Court on Friday which will oversee the daily operations of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

 The apex court is set to appoint a six-member panel as opposed to three out of which three members are most likely to be cricketers.

 Interestingly, Bedi and Engineer, while great cricketers, go against the very grain of the reforms process which was recommended by the Supreme Court-appointed Lodha Committee.

Science & Technology:

1. Indian Space Research Organization has successfully realigned the orbit of its Mars Orbiter Mission ‘Mangalyaan‘ so it is not affected by long-duration eclipse, ISRO Chairman A.S. Kiran Kumar said today.

 The duration of the eclipse was so long that had we done nothing, the Mangalyaan’s battery capacity would have got exhausted due to lack of sun rays. No effect of the eclipse was felt on Mangalyaan yesterday.

2. Scientists have named three relatively little-known diseases, MERS (Middle East respiratory syndrome), Lassa fever and Nipah virus as the next potential global health emergency threat.

 In this regard, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) has committed 460 million dollars to speed up vaccine development for these three diseases. CEPI aims to have two new experimental vaccines ready for each disease within five years in order to be prepared incase of their global outbreaks.
