Flipkart Sinking into Online Grocery Segment with ‘Supermart’; Starts with Bengaluru

Flipkart the online shopping platform recently decided to add Grocery shopping in their long list of selling products. It was just a matter of time before this system got adapted by Flipkart. From now on, you can do grocery shopping from home and from your trusted and favourite shopping site. You don’t have to worry about delivery because they will deliver your groceries at your doorstep.

However, for now this is available in Bengaluru or Bangalore. No need to worry though. Flipkart stated that they will start with Bangalore and then will gradually expand this facility to all other major cities. They expect to start this service to all the other major cities by the end of the year. Groceries are one of the most common day to day need items so the market for it is huge and it will only grow day by day.

Even though Flipkart is a bit late in starting, the company itself does not think so. There are only 2 other companies that provide this service – Big Basket and Amazon. So, Flipkart is positive that there is a lot of chance to grow as it is expected that this retail market will only grow. Groceries play a big role in India’s retail market. It will be another success for Flipkart.

To supply grocery especially fresh fruits and vegetable, Flipkart has set up a dedicated supply chain with a separate delivery fleet. Flipkart has set up a 150,000 square foot centre in the city so that it can deliver the products easily. It is been reported that for the grocery operation, Flipkart has also set aside around 400 million to set up infrastructure like warehouses.

Flipkart decided to use an innovative technique and deliver the products as ‘open-box deliveries’. This is done for the benefits of the customers so that they can inspect the goods and if they don’t like any product can return it immediately. This way the issue of return of goods will be solved as it will be a very hard thing to do.

Flipkart also decided to expand their ‘buy now, pay later’ service for the customers’ grocery shopping. They have their own label – “Flipkart Supermart Select” from where you can buy the groceries directly.

However, Flipkart will now deliver only packaged items, personal items and other goods. They won’t enter the fresh food market yet as they need even more innovative ideas to enter that market as well as ensure that every customer receive fresh fruits and vegetables which is quite difficult to do. But with time we can expect Flipkart to start delivering fruits and vegetables as well.

Within the next few years, many other companies will start to deliver groceries like Milk Lane and Delivery Ninja and there are already a few in the market like Big Basket. Flipkart will add their service among them and will gradually expand their delivery services.
