Rajeev Mittal of RK Associates bets on IRCTC food menu modifications

IRCTC changes to bring new food items to train journeys, railway caterers to follow suit

Food has been one of the constant setbacks in every conversation about a train journey. Passengers have regularly complained about the quality, hygiene and variety of Food in the past few years. In an attempt to improve customer experience, IRCTC has decided to make some substantial changes in the food menu.

Railway Board has received a plan from the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), which explains the concept and method of revamping the food menu. According to IRCTC, the cost of raw materials and making is not maintaining a balance with the low cost of railway food. So, it seems feasible to suggest a reasonable deduction in the quantity of food. This would directly assist in improving the food quality and travel experience of passengers.

Rajeev Mittal, the owner of RK Associates expressed, “The quantity of the overall meal would be reduced by 100 to 200 grams. The average railway meal was 900 grams, which will be reduced proportionally from each item. The idea is to prioritize quality over quantity. Customers deserve the best food in their travel journey and this is going to be a leap in the same direction. “

However, the idea of combo meals replacing a full course preparation is subject to public scrutiny. In the recent past, IRCTC has taken crucial steps in the field of catering as well as hygiene. While the kitchen live-stream technology was initiated at a railway station in Pune, the Point-of-Sale machines have been introduced to combat the issue of overpricing in railways. Major players of railway catering like Manish Chandra and RK Associates believe that these amendments will change the face of food experience in trains.

“The packaging of food will be done with an airtight sealed cover and trays will be made of ecofriendly material”, added Rajeev Mittal. This comes in the wake of a total plastic ban in Mumbai Railways. To improve hygiene, the train staff will wear gloves and passengers will be provided with sanitizers. These food changes will receive an immediate public response with on-board staff carrying feedback tablets.

With the combinative effort of IRCTC and Indian Railways, it looks like the long awaited reforms are finally coming into action. Over the course of the next few months, the passengers will decide the fate of this change: Success or Attempt.
