What is Jamb marking scheme?

Does having a knowledge of the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board marking scheme helps one pass jamb better?

The question and source of concern to many students who intend to write the JAMB exam or has just recently concluded one is the way the exam would be graded and marks will be allocated. This methodology is called the Jamb Marking Scheme.

This is not surprising as this comes in the light of the new development in JAMB where the number of questions has been reduced, so how will the grading look like?

It is important to remember basic things that will be of help in understanding the grading system:

JAMB marking scheme means a system used by JAMB to award marks or points for correct answers in UTME which you can check with Jamb result checker.

JAMB requires that you register and write four (4) subjects; out of these four subjects, Use of English is compulsory and any other three relevant subjects of the student’s choice (this is generally determined by the department of such student).

Also, Use of English contains hundred (100) questions but all questions don’t carry equal marks, for example, the comprehension passage usually carry more marks than the other questions, presently, JAMB exam has two comprehension passages and each passage contains five questions, that is, two passages in total is ten (10) questions, each question carries three (3) marks which give a total of thirty (30) marks for comprehension passages.

This means that thirty (30) marks will be the score for answering comprehension passages only and all other questions will be totaled to the sum of seventy (70) marks to complete the hundred (100) total mark.

For the other three selected subjects, JAMB exams presently offer forty questions to be attempted, it is noticeable here that the questions have been reduced from fifty to forty, however, it does not affect the marking scheme, that is, JAMB scores will still be marked over hundred percent (100%).

This implies that the total score for JAMB 2018/2019 is four hundred (400) and the highest that can be scored is four hundred (400), of course, there is no definite lowest score, that is totally up to the student.

To understand better, here is an example, if you are required to answer forty questions in Mathematics and you aced your exam and scored forty over forty (40/40), then you have scored hundred percent (100%) in Mathematics. This is how it will be marked:

Highest score obtainable for the subject: 40

Student’s score in the subject: 40

Total percentage: 100%

That is, the student’s score will be multiplied by a hundred (score x 100) and divided by forty (score x 100/40). This gives a total of a hundred.

Here is another example; if a student scores thirty over forty, the same grading as above applies. JAMB will multiply the score by hundred and divide it by forty which gives a score of 75%.

Also, many have wondered if JAMB make use of the Negative Marking Scheme. While some believe staunchly that it is being used, some oppose the idea.

What exactly is the Negative Marking Scheme? It is the process whereby a wrongly answered question in an exam automatically cancels a rightly answered question.

Imagine if the Negative Jamb Marking Scheme was employed, then a student who scores fifty (50) questions correctly and fifty(50) questions wrong will end up with zero (0) marks which is not possible. To this effect, it is important to note that JAMB doesn’t support nor make use of the Negative Marking Scheme.

Whatever the student answers correctly will be given to such, that is, the student is graded with the exact mark he/she scored accurately.

In light of this, all students intending to participate in the next JAMB exam are encouraged to answer all questions, that is, attempt all questions, answer those you know first and then go back to attempt others, don’t leave anyone not shaded.

Be confident and prayerful.

It is also important to note that the time allocated for all four subjects is three hours and thirty minutes, therefore, it is important for any student participating in the next JAMB exam to start practicing with the time factor, it will be of great help in the main exam.

While it is important to know all the pertinent information provided above, the student must also ensure that he/she prepares adequately and well ahead of the next JAMB exam, it is very possible to score four hundred over four hundred (400/400) since the idea of marking scheme has been eliminated, this all depends on the preparation and readiness of the student, the use of past question cannot be over-emphasized and the importance of timing oneself cannot be overstated,  in essence, knowledge must be met with preparedness to achieve a great result
