University of Lagos, Lagos: Established in 1962, based on a need for professional workforce independent Nigeria, Unilag, as it is popularly called is a Federal Government research University located in Lagos in South Western Nigeria. The school of the first choice and the nation’s pride has since established itself as one of the top universities in Nigeria.

Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria: Located in Zaria in Kaduna state, the university was established in 1962 to cater to the Northern region after independence. Popularly called ABU Zaria, the federal government research university is a force to reckon with among high institutions in Nigeria.

The University of Ibadan, Ibadan: Known as the Premier University because it was the first university to be established in Nigeria in 1948 as the University College. The university, which is popularly called UI or Unibadan is located in Ibadan and till date, still among the first universities in Nigeria.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka: Established in 1960, UNN, as it is popularly called was founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe, the then premier of the defunct Eastern region. Modeled upon the American educational system, UNN has been able to retain its position among the best universities in Nigeria.

University of Ilorin, Ilorin: Established in 1975, it is a federal government university located in Ilorin in Kwara state. As the only federal university not a member of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), and despite not been among the first generation universities, it is a force to reckon with among high institutions in Nigeria.

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife: Formerly called University of Ife, the university is a federal government research university founded in 1961 by the inspiration of Chief Obafemi Awolowo (who the university was later named after). As a first generation university, it is among the best universities in Nigeria.

Federal University of Technology, Minna: Located in Minna, Niger state, it is a federal government university focused on technological education. Established in 1983, FUT Minna, as it is popularly called, is the center of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering in Nigeria.

Federal University of Technology, Akure: Established in 1981, it is also a federal government university specialized in technological education. The school was established out of the need for students who were learned practically as well as theoretically and it is a top school in the country.

University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt: Established as University College in 1975, the institution was changed to a university in 1977. Located in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, UniPort, as it is commonly called, is regarded as one of the top universities in Nigeria.

The University of Benin, Benin City: Established in 1970, Uniben, as it is commonly called, started as an Institute of Technology and given a university status in 1971. As a first generation federal government research university, it is a force to reckon with among universities in Nigeria.

Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta:  Located in the Ogun state capital, Abeokuta, the university was first established as a university of technology. The university specializes in Agricultural education alongside that of Makurdi and it is a top university in the country.

Federal University, Oye-Ekiti: Established in 2011 by the former president of Nigeria, Goodluck Government, the university a federal government university located in Oye-Ekiti. Although quite young, it is able to hold its own as a top university in Nigeria.

The University of Jos, Jos: Established in 1971 as a satellite campus of the University of Ibadan, Unijos, as it is widely known, was separated as its own institution in 1975 by the then Military Government of Murtala Mohammed. Since then, it has been standing strong.

Federal University of Technology, Owerri: Located in the Imo state capital, Owerri, it was established in 1980 as one of the universities of technology in the country. FUTO, as it is popularly called, has since then been known for churning out technologically sound students.

University of Uyo, Uyo: Established not too long ago in 1991, the university was formerly known as University of Cross River State. But after Akwa Ibom state was established in 1987, the federal government changed it to a federal school and renamed it. It has since remained as a top university in Nigeria.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka: Established in 1991, the university has two campuses; in Awka and in Nnewi, both in Anambra state. It was formerly of ASUTECH (Anambra State University of Technology) but was transformed to a federal university by the federal government in 1992.

Usmanu Danfodiyo University, Sokoto: Formerly called the University of Sokoto, the university is a federal government research university located in Sokoto. It is established in 1975 and regarded as one of the top universities in Nigeria.

Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umuahia: Established by the federal government in 1992, it was formerly called Federal University of Agriculture. As a university of agriculture, it is considered one of the top universities in the country.

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology, Ogbomoso: Located in Ogbomoso in Oyo state, the university was established in 1990 as Oyo State University of Technology (then consisting of both Oyo and Osun states). After the separation of Osun state from Oyo state, it was renamed and is one of the top schools in Nigeria.

Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko: Established in 1999, the university is run by the Ondo state government. It was formerly Obafemi Awolow University, then Ondo State University before its present name after the relocation of the school to Akungba Akoko due to the creation of a new state from the Old Ondo state. The university, though state-run, is one of the top universities in Nigeria.

University of Abuja, Abuja: Established in 1988, the university is federal government run tertiary institution. The University of Abuja has been able to hold its own and regarded as a top university in the country.

Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti: Established in 1988, it is a non-profit private university located in Ado-Ekiti. The university was established by Aare Afe Babalola, a prominent entrepreneur from Ekiti state. Although the only private university on the list, it is a recognized university in Nigeria.
