Punjab Regularizes Teaching To Improve Educational Standards

Improvement in the standard of Education is definitely on the cards for the state of Punjab. Om Prakash Soni, the Education Minister of Punjab in a recent address to the media mentioned around 5000+ teachers were recently regularised and also given a full pay scale, starting next month. Soni also mentioned that regularization of the teachers helps in improving the educational standards since it improves their commitment. The minister also mentioned that the Sikhya providers and the volunteer teachers will get a pay hike of Rs.1500 starting next month. It definitely is a welcome change for the education system in Punjab.

Teachers that had previously participated in a protest and suspended have been reinstated. Also, the teachers who were transferred to distant places previously have received an order to return to their parent stations. However, there has been a warning about strict actions to be taken in case any teachers took part in any protests in the future.

The Education Minister of Punjab in a statement last year mentioned that the Government schools in the state are going to receive computer in an effort to bring them to par with the private schools. The secretary of school education of Punjab has asked the Government primary schools to decide if they can implement English medium to follow instructions in the coming school session.

The literacy rate in Punjab has seen an upward surge in recent years. The female literacy rate is at 76% and the male literacy at 84%. The numbers are not a surprise since Punjab has over 1739 Government high schools, 1382 Government senior secondary schools, and 345 vocational and other academic institutions in the state of Punjab.

The usual 4 tier schooling system has been grouped into a two-tier system in Punjab. The Industrial development in recent years has led to a surge in the requirement of technical and non-technical resources, thus leading to an increased number of technical and higher educational institutions. The Government of Punjab has been making efforts in increasing the retention, enrollment, improved infrastructure of existing schools, and opening of new ones. The main objective of the Education ministry in Punjab has been to provide free and compulsory education across the state.

While the Government of Punjab has been making great strides in improving the educational standards across the state, the allocation of resources towards the higher education in Punjab has been minuscule. However, all the educational institutions like college and universities in Punjab have a reservation for foreign nationals. This reservation opens up great opportunities to the foreign education enthusiasts.

The education system in the state of Punjab has gone through tremendous changes in the primary education and needs a lot of improvement in the higher education part. While the enrollment of new students, retaining of the existing ones have all been in great stride. Allocation of resources towards higher education definitely needs a surge and overall importance needs to be given to the other technical and vocational education for an overall improvement in the education system of the state of Punjab.
