Mathematics and its Connection with other Subjects

Charles Caleb Colton said that The Study of Mathematics, like the Nile, begins in minuteness but ends in magnificence.

  • Mathematics and Computers:
Computer owes its advancement to the developments of Boole to Turing. Mathematics and Logic are interconnected to each other. And there is huge interdependence of Computer on Mathematics. Mathematicians like Russell and Whitehead laid the foundation of Logic which has now become integral to the functioning of Computer. Not only this, even the programmers need to apply Logic with the help of Mathematics to write programs.
  • Mathematics and Social Science:
The Economic and Social Research Council defines Social Science as Social science is, in its broadest sense, the study of society and the manner in which people behave and influence the world around us. • In the field of Economics: Mathematics is a part and parcel of Economics. Those students who study Economics have to use Mathematics at some or another. Drawing graphs, calculating the per capita income, working out the numbers of trade, etc.

Mathematics has always been the most abstract and obscure Field of the human creation. Most mathematical theories and models draw inspiration from the practical life. The close relation that mathematics holds with the real life, it can be used to solve numerous problems even in our lives.

Pollak and Jaffee mentioned in their work that Many sciences such as biology, economics and sociology have become more and more mathematized. This is also and especially due to the rapid development in the field of computer science.

Even Kaiser-Messmer (1986) said in one of their works that – As is well-known, there are many simplified models for the complex interrelations between mathematics and the real world. By “real world” we mean the “rest of the world” outside mathematics, i.e. everyday life, the world around us, other disciplines ……..
