Some useful pointers reasons may include:

  • Apprenticeship Programs
  • High-end research on the chosen field
  • Government support
  • Promising Learning Environment
  • Experiential/Action Learning
  • Lack of infrastructure in the home country
  1. Why did you select this particular university?

Answer: The University is offering one of the best curriculums in ________ (chosen course). The faculties are very experienced. Placement records from year ____ to ____ also prove this point.

Mention some key factual details about the course curriculum, the faculty, the university/college ranking to show that you have done your own research.

  1. Why do you want to pursue this course?

Answer: I have selected this course because my natural strengths and competencies will sync in well in this area. I have done a project on it (show it). Moreover, I am studying this subject during my graduation/intermediate, which has developed my interest and competency.  My decision to choose this Program is based on my purpose, passion, and performance more than anything else, though I have also consulted with my teachers and sought valuable guidance on the same.

For technical courses show that you are analytical/logical, like mathematics, problem-solving, understand design and structures, like to work on the system, prefer order in execution.

For creative courses like arts and humanities show and tell that you are creative, good thinker, imaginative, innovative in approach to getting things done.

  1. Why don’t you do this course in India?

Answer: Though India offers the program, but unfortunately my country is yet to develop the right infrastructure and the intelligence to support such a lucrative field. The industry understands the situations and therefore students pursuing this program from study abroad are in huge demand back home.

Indian companies like __________, _____________, ___________ are increasingly demanding candidates from this area and are offering formidable salary packages. But unfortunately, the colleges/universities in India aren’t well equipped to deliver hands-on practical training and experience, without which many fresh graduates find it difficult to use their learning in a pragmatic way, once they join the industry. Studying from an international college will help bridge the gap between theory and practice.

  1. What you plan to do after completing your studies?

Answer:  I will return to India after completing my course program. I will then make efforts to join in a good MNC in ____________ (Indian city) and put my learning to test. India has huge demand for ___________ and will provide me with a good career path for growth. I will use my professional network that I developed as an intern during college years.

  1. How are you going to fund your education?

Answer: Much of the funding (roughly 70%) towards my education has already been arranged in a well-planned way by my parents. We have maintained a healthy balance of funds and cash flow with a complete recording of transactions, tax invoices, and transfer details.  Since the decision to study was made 2 years in advance, we already had exercised a proactive approach to arranging funds for the same. Specifically, 50% of the entire course fee is coming from past savings in cash, 30% from stock dividends, and the remaining from loan assistance.

  1. Why do you want to change your major? What steps have you taken to ensure that you will be able to do well in the new stream?

Answer: First, I don’t find anything unusual in it. In fact, I exercised my choice with a healthy scepticism and arrived at the decision after much serious thought and consultation with my seniors and teachers. I have researched and found that my skill sets work much better in the new found stream than in my major. To gain additional support, I did few assignments and have produced good results within a very short time.

Second, I have also conducted my own psychometric profiling and got evidence of the nature of work I should put my energies in, to reap maximum growth.

And most important, I did an apprenticeship under _____________ for (3 – 6 months), which gave me the boost and the belief that this stream is for me.

  1. Do you plan to work in the U.S while you study, may be on-campus?

Answer: The coming 2 years is very crucial for me. Lots of effort are involved from my side, my parent’s money and hopes are involved in it. I don’t want to lose on this great opportunity by dissipating my energies in other activities, rather, that time and energy will be better utilized in learning and professional networking.

  1. Most applicants like you turn out to be potential immigrants. What about you? Do you plan to come back to India once you finish your course? Why don’t you think of taking up a job in this country after your graduation?

Answer: My objective for pursuing this course is to learn. Had it not been for the gap between industry demand and learning infrastructure, I would have pursued the program in my own country. It’s in my best interest to return India and serve in an MNC as an early entrant and a specialist in this domain.
