Obafemi Awolowo University 

OAU is one of the Best Universities for Pharmacy in Nigeria . The Faculty of Pharmacy, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, founded in 1962 as a Department of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Science, it is the premier institution to provide pharmacy education in Nigeria.

A very large percent of Nigerian pharmacists working in the country and abroad are graduates of this University (formerly called University of Ife). With the demand of this noble profession coupled with perception of its tremendous contribution to our society, the department was upgraded to a full-fledged Faculty in 1969, with four main departments: Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Pharmacology, Pharmacognosy, and Pharmaceutics.

Over the period of growth and development of the Faculty, a Drug Research and Production Unit, and an additional department – Clinical Pharmacy and Pharmacy Administration were established to consolidate the various efforts on teaching, research and service in the Faculty.

University of Ibadan 

The Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) programme commenced at the University of Ibadan in the 1980/81 academic session. The then Department of Pharmacy was based in the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences and Pharmacy in the College of Medicine under the Headship of Professor D. T. Okpako who was also the substantive Head of the Department of Pharmacology and Therareutics. The Department of Pharmacy was split into two Departments in the 1981/82 session and finally into the following four Departments in the 1982/83 academic session:

(i) Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry.

(ii) Department of Pharmaceutics and Clinical Pharmacy.

(iii) Department of Pharmaceutical Technology and Industrial Pharmacy.

(iv) Department of Pharmacognosy.

There were two Visitation Panels from the Pharmacists Board of Nigeria in November 1981 and February 1983 respectively. The Board finally approved the Ibadan programme after the 1983 visitation. The B.Pharm. programme assumed status of a faculty office August 1, 1983 with professor A.A. Olaniyi as the foundation Dean. Professor Olaniyi finished his 2 terms of 2 years each as the Dean in 1987 and was succeeded by Professor D. T. Okpako as the second Dean from 1987 to 1991. The third Dean of the Faculty was Professor K.T. Jaiyeoba from 1991 to 1995.

The B.Pharm. programme had operated two curricula: the 4year curriculum and 5-year curriculum. The institution’s faculty of Pharmacy still remains one of the best Universities for Pharmacy in Nigeria

Ahmadu Bello University

The initial training at the School of Pharmacy in Zaria started around 1947 to train dispensers (Dispensers Course), and much later in 1961 it was upgraded to the Chemist and Druggist Diploma. This was the first requirement for registration as a Pharmacist by the former Pharmacist Board of Nigeria PBN.

The entry requirement for the Diploma in one of the Best Universities for Pharmacy in Nigeria (ABU) was the Nigerian College of Arts, Science and Technology (NCAST) certificate, Ibadan. However candidates with credits in the relevant science subjects in GCE O Level were admitted for a five year course. At the end of the course, successful candidates were awarded two diplomas viz the Professional Diploma of the PBN (the Chemist and Druggist Diploma) and the Pharmaceutical Chemists Diploma (of the Pharmacy School, Zaria).

The three year Pharmacy degree programme was started in 1968 in the Department of Pharmacy and Pharmacology, Faculty of Science, ABU Zaria. However the first set of students were admitted in 1970 and they graduated in 1973 with a BSc degree in Pharmacy.

University of Lagos

The Faculty of Pharmacy was incepted as a School in the College of Medicine, University of Lagos in 1980. The foundation units, Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology, the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy were created by Senate of the University in 1980.

The two departments were then based in the School of Basic Medical Sciences. Given the necessary interactions between the University of Lagos and the Pharmacy Board of Nigeria (now Pharmacists Council of Nigeria), which is, the regulatory Body in charge of Pharmacy education, there were developments in terms of infrastructure, academic staff recruitment and development, teaching and research facilities, curriculum and programme expansion. The School was later restructured into 4 departments viz:

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry, Department of Pharmacognosy, Department of Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology and the Department of Clinical Pharmacy and Biopharmacy. The School was officially recognized by the Pharmacy Board (now Pharmacists Council of Nigeria (PCN) in May 1984 as an academic institution authorized by the Laws of the Land to train and graduate degree holders in Pharmacy in line with the appropriate tenets of the University of Lagos.

The School of Pharmacy produced its first Bachelor of Pharmacy graduates in September 1984. Further developments within the School continued, and with the assistance of the University Authorities, the School attained the status of a Full fledged Faculty of the University of Lagos in 2003. UNILAG is still one of the Best Universities for Pharmacy in Nigeria .

University of Maidugiri

The philosophy of the Pharmacy programme is to produce well-educated graduates and trained professionals for a wide range of scientific, professional and managerial functions, which best serve the needs of the community with sufficient adaptability to meet the demands of a changing health care delivery system.

Students will be provided with the opportunity to apply pharmaceutical and biomedical knowledge to problems of drug therapy related to patient care. Students will become aware of the use of medicines in order to encourage the concept of pharmaceutical care within the health care delivery system.

The ultimate objective of University of Maidugiri Pharmacy department is to produce graduate practitioners with knowledge, skills and motivation to contribute meaningfully to proper patient care, public health, teaching research and local drug production. The programme, which is based on an internationally competitive curriculum, will be able to increase the necessary knowledge and manpower that is required to achieve excellence in pharmacy education and mitigate the deplorable drug situation in the country on the long term.

Niger Delta University

The Faculty of Pharmacy of the Niger Delta University is also one of the best Universities for Pharmacy in Nigeria . The school offers a 5-year course that leads to the award of Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) Honours. NDU appears to also be on the list of Best Universities for Pharmacy in Nigeria .

The Department of chemistry is committed to offering a curriculum. While specialization in a number of sub-disciplines is possible, the Chemistry B.Sc. at Niger Delta University provides the necessary background and understanding for students to tackle any job within the realm of the working chemist. In addition, the courses offered will serve as preparation for students that are contemplating advanced studies, whether they are at the post-graduate level in Chemistry or in other disciplines. Chemistry is also fundamental to a number of other disciplines including Geology, and Biology.

University of Nigeria

The University of Nigeria is one of the best Univer in Nigeria. The Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences started as a Department in the Faculty of Science in 1967. Due to the civil war, which lasted from 1967 to 1970, the Department did not function until 1970. It later became part of the Faculty of Biological Sciences.

The first group of students numbering 14, graduated in 1974 and since that year more than 4,000 pharmacy (B.Pharm) graduates and 30 Bachelor of Science (B.Sc Combined Pharmacology/Biochemistry) graduates have been produced, little wonder the instmakes it to the list of top 10 best Universities for Pharmacy in Nigeria

Madonna University

The establishment of a Pharmacy program was in the original plan of the University. It came on stream in 2003 when the first batch of students where admitted. The program was for Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm) degree in the Department of Pharmacy. Even if the department is new, it is still one of the best Universities for Pharmacy in Nigeria .

The year 2005 saw changes in the Pharmacy Program. With the approval of the University Senate, the Faculty of Pharmacy was established to replace the Department of Pharmacy. The Faculty has six Departments, which are as follows:

University of Benin.

University of Benin Pharmacy Department is one of the clinically oriented department. The Pharmacy department was set up alongside with the inception of the hospital in May 1973.

The Department is well equipped with qualified Personnel (Pharmacists) with degrees in B.Pharm, Pharm D and Masters Degree in various fields. In the light of the above, there is a drive to various areas of specialties.
