How to Prepare Students for Exams

Once a Student enters high school, they begin the onslaught of life-altering exams so there is need to prepare students for exams. Some exams are taken while the students are still in secondary education, others will take near the end of their college years in an effort to become certified for their respective careers. Instead of going into these important assessments blindly, there are programs in place to prepare students for exams. Below are a few major exams that students will have to take and ways to get ready for them.

Practice Makes Perfect

As a secondary education teacher, there are ways to prepare students for exams. The key is to not cram everything into a few weeks, but share knowledge about the exams over the course of the school year. A quick online search will also yield practice tests for both the ACTs and SATs. These are two of the most popular tests in America.

Instead of just putting the link up to these practice tests on your teacher website, put it up on the smartboard and go through all the steps and questions as a class together. If you just put up a link, most of the students will not take the time to actually take the practice test at home. They will be kicking themselves the day of the actual test though. By going through the practice exam as a class, you can ensure that they will be ready for it and won’t be surprised the day of.

Mix It Up

Preparing for these exams can get a bit boring as an educator and as a student. It will be very repetitive if you do not change up the preparation for it. Use anything that will help the students learn. Throw in videos, quizzes, worksheets, and discussion. Turn things into a game where students compete against one another. Do anything to make it the most enjoyable that you can. When kids are bored, they do not remember things well. But if they are having some excitement in the classroom, they will be able to recall the information much better.

Keep a Schedule

One tip that students often give one another after they take the major exams is that they should always have a schedule in place. Tackling all subjects at once for two to three weeks is not the ideal way to prepare. Instead, make a detailed schedule splitting up the subject areas and the amount of time allocated for studying. By having a schedule to follow, the students will be less apt to put everything off until the last moment.

Know Your Learners

As the teacher, you should have an idea what type of learner your students are. There are basically four types of learners. There is visual, auditory, reading/writing, and kinesthetic. As their educator, it is essential that you incorporate all four of these into your lesson plans when preparing the students for the universal testing.

Use of Technology

There are apps and websites that can assist the students with the exact question formatting and also similar questions they will be experiencing on the real exam. Knowing what to expect as soon as you enter those doors to take the test can help ease anxiety and any stress that the student may be feeling.

Hard Work Pays Off

If a student works hard enough and spends enough time studying correctly, they are bound to get a good score. While these exams are not easy, if a student is well prepared, that is half the battle. Kids can organize studying groups, too, in an effort to strengthen their skills. Often times, two heads are better than one, so working with someone can prepare students for exams better.

Be Prepared

Lastly, plan ahead for the exam day. If you are a secondary teacher preparing your students for outside exams, tell them to give themselves plenty of extra time and head to the exam center early. Also, eating a healthy breakfast can be beneficial to a student when they have to sit in one place for long time. By putting these plans in place, you can prepare students for exams and their chance at success only will increase.
