Water is at the Core of Sustainable Development

Water is an essential component that affects the livelihoods of billions of individuals across the world. Humans cannot live without water because our bodies need water to function, and water resources and the multitude of services they provide underpin poverty-reduction, economic growth, and environmental sustainability.

The average adult human body contains around 60%-70% water; the body cannot store water though, and we constantly lose water through sweating, urination and other normal bodily functions so we need to drink water regularly to replace what we have lost.

It is crucial that every individual has adequate access to potable water for use as drinking water, basic hygiene needs, and basic food hygiene. With the constant population growth and the migration to cities in search of a better life, most countries are having problems with their antiquated water infrastructure systems not able to cope.

With approximately 93% of urbanisation taking place in poor or developing countries, approximately 40% of this urban expansion is growing slums, and this means that there is little to no infrastructure, insufficient clean drinking water, and minimal to no hygienic sanitation. This leads to illness and death, which puts additional strain on the country’s economy.

All freshwater supplies ultimately depend on ecosystems such as wetlands, grasslands and forests, which means that more environmentally Sustainable economic policies are called for.

The burgeoning population also means that industry is growing at a rapid rate, and no industry can survive without water. We need to ensure though that water efficiency and conservation is made a priority of industry. Water is also vital to energy, which is needed for just about everything.

Water contributes to improvements in social well-being and inclusive growth and is vital to human and environmental health and food and energy security. In other words, humanity cannot survive let alone thrive without water!
