What are the Solutions to the Global Water Crisis?

While the water Crisis is not being experienced in every single country across the globe, sufficient countries are already suffering from extreme weather conditions, ranging from devastating droughts to floods, cyclones and worse.

Global warming will affect three-quarters of the planet by 2030 though, unless we all do something about conserving water and looking after our planet far better.

While each one of us can and must do our bit to conserve, reuse and recycle water in our own little pieces of paradise, our governments, water utilities and non-profits also have a responsibility; they can help by:

  • Educating Everyone to Change their Consumption and Lifestyle: The only way that the face of this impending crisis will change is by educating people and corporations to be more responsible in their use of fresh water resources. This includes a major overhaul of all forms of consumption, from individual use to the supply chains of major corporations. Some regions such as Australia, India, and the Southwest U.S. are already facing the freshwater crisis; now this needs to be translated into a worldwide movement.
  • Water Conservation Technologies: Coping with freshwater scarcity in areas where aquifers are drying up and rainwater is increasingly unpredictable, requires innovative ideas. New conservation technologies that do not require too much energy consumption are called for.
  • Improved Irrigation Technologies / Agricultural Practices: Approximately 70% of the world’s fresh water supplies is utilised for agriculture; unfortunately this can also mean that much of it is wasted. Many farms are still using outdated irrigation practices meant for an earlier era, and this has meant that the ability to provide sufficient food and fibre to a growing population has become very difficult. In many areas it is possible to improve on what there is, which means that it need not cost the farmers as much as installing completely new systems.

There are many ways in which to help save water, all it takes is the will to do it.
