Review: Daterra – Full Bloom by Toby’s Estate

In today’s addition to The Bean Pole, we’re going to be looking at another Coffee I was given over the Christmas period, but this time it came from a lot further away than Yorkshire.

I’ll start off with a bit of a backstory here, as this is the first of several coffees that I’ll be reviewing from Australia, so if you’re not interested in how or why I got this coffee, feel free to skip to the ‘Let’s talk coffee’ section below.

How did we get here?

As I’ve progressed with my love for coffee and the content I create to put up on this blog, I’ve started to reach out to as many coffee lovers, roasters and brands as I can, to get opinions, samples and even feedback on what I’m doing right or wrong and how I can better share my love for coffee.

One roaster that I reached out to was Hills & Dee, a micro-roaster based in Sydney. They kindly brought over a few coffees from down under for me to try and it’s been a real eye-opening experience.

I’d heard through the grapevine that Australia was producing excellent coffee, and I’m happy to report that the gifts I got from Hills & Dee did not disappoint.

Whilst the coffee culture in Australia is something I’d love to experience myself, as ever money or rather a lack of it, has scuppered any immediate plans I may have had, and so I have to settle for living vicariously through bloggers from those parts. Tesspresso, in particular, has some amazing content on the cafe culture in Melbourne, so make sure you check out her blog if you’re planning a trip to Oz.

But enough of that, let’s get down to business and discuss the Daterra – Full Bloom by Toby’s Estate.

Let’s talk coffee

Let me start by keeping it short and sweet, this coffee is delicious.

If you ever have the pleasure of getting your hands on a batch, don’t hesitate, just buy it.

Here’s why.

The Daterra is one of those subtle coffees that leaves you wanting more after you’ve finished each cup. As someone who has a sweet tooth, this coffee got pretty addictive. Grown in Brazil and left to dry naturally on its tree, this Brazilian coffee is an absolute show stopper.

Even though the beans are grown at a pretty modest altitude of 1100 metres in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil, it rivals some of the coffees I’ve tried that are grown at 3,000 metres and above for sweet vanilla notes that make you want to curl up on the sofa and settle down for cup after cup.

This 100% Arabica coffee comes with roaster notes that let you know that you should be experiencing hints of blueberry, ripe peach and vanilla when drinking and that it should be brewed as an espresso.

I couldn’t really tell if there were hints of blueberry, but then again I struggle to pick out blueberries in a blueberry smoothie so I wouldn’t assume that there aren’t any hints in there, my pallet just struggles with that particular flavour.

On the other hand, peach was there in subtle notes, whilst vanilla was very prominent. I also found that the coffee both smelt and tasted like caramel, which again emphasises how sweet I found it.

If I have one regret about this particular bean, it’s that I didn’t enjoy it with a Caramac. I won’t make the same mistake if I have it again in the future!

When it comes to the texture it was creamy, smooth and not too dissimilar to a Baileys (minus the alcohol obviously).

It left a really pleasant aftertaste and had a finish not dissimilar to a well-made merlot, with the taste sitting on the tongue for quite a few minutes after I’d finished drinking it.

When all is said and done I’m struggling to find any faults with this delicious blend.

The Daterra is an elegant and refined fully natural coffee that you’d be proud to share with your friends and family on the regular or even treat your other half to on a special occasion… it’s that good.
