I will present it in chronological order the history of our Philippine Flag, starting in 1898 when the Republic was officially established. Prior to 1898 were revolutionary flags, but those flags only represented a certain region or its struggle for independence from Spain.

1898 – 1901

Ironically, made in Hong Kong, but thankfully by Filipinos working there. Then delivered by General Emilio Aguinaldo on May 28, 1898, and displayed the flag during a battle against the Spaniards in Alapan, Cavite.

This same flag was waved by General Aguinaldo, the first President of the Republic, during the proclamation of independence from Spain on June 12, 1898.

1901 – 1907

Using the same flag, but inverted with the blue on top continued until 1907 when the Americans passed a law prohibiting for its used, and replaced it with the United States flag.

1919 – 1936

Through the efforts of Governor-General Francis Burton Harrison and Filipino lawmakers, revived the use of the Philippine Flag in 1919.

The design was slightly modified – the facial elements in the Sun was removed.

1936 – 1941

President Manuel L. Quezon signed Executive Order No. 23, s. 1936, to establish the official design, color and size of the Philippine flag.

1941 – 1945

The Filipino flag be displayed the inverted version with the red on top to represent the state of war, after the issuance of Executive Order No. 386, s. 1941, signed by President Quezon. This was the official flag used by the exiled Philippine government during World War II.

1943 – 1944

The Japanese occupying forces used the Aguinaldo version of the Philippine flag during the World War II, along with the Japanese Imperial flag.

1985 – 1986

President Ferdinand E. Marcos signed Executive Order No. 1010, s. 1985, mandating the change of color, from navy blue to light blue Philippine Flag. But this was short-lived, as it was unpopular and restored the 1936 flag when President Corazon C. Aquino became the president in 1986.

1998 – Present

During President Fidel V. Ramos, the Republic Act. No. 8491 or the “An Act Prescribing The Code Of The National Flag, Anthem, Motto, Coat-of-arms And Other Heraldic Items And Devices Of The Philippines” was enacted.

SECTION 27. The flag shall have the following proportions. The width of the flag, 1; the length of the flag, 2; and the sides of the white triangle, 1.

SECTION 28. The technical specifications shall be as follows:

The blue color shall bear Cable No. 80173; the white color, Cable No. 80001 the red color, Cable No. 80108; and the golden yellow, Cable No. 80068.
