FENERBAHÇE LIGHTHOUSE

It is assumed that the first lighthouse was constructed in the era of Byzantine Empire in this location and there were a temple devoted to Goddess Hera and a lighthouse located on the rocks. Located on an island, separated from the mainland by only a narrow channel, near the end of the Fener Kalamış Caddesi about 1.5 km (1 mile) south of Kadıköy.

The historical Fenerbahce Lighthouse is still used today and located on the northern shores of the Sea of Marmara in Istanbul’s district of Kadikoy. There are historical documents referring to the location of the cape that caused damage to ships and in 1562, Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent , issued a decree ordering a structure with light be built on the rocks at Kalamış Cape as it was known then. 

The Fenerbahçe Lighthouse (Turkish: Fenerbahçe Feneri), a historical lighthouse still in use, is located on the northern coast of Sea of Marmara at Fenerbahçe neighborhood of Kadıköy district in Istanbul, Turkey.

Location
The lighthouse was built in 1857 and stands on a point at Cape Fenerbahçe which is close to the eastern side of the Bosphorus entrance and is where Fenerbahçe takes its name from as “fener” means lighthouse.  Located in a public park south of Kadıköy

Building
Round concrete tower, painted white. There is a Lighthouse and fog horn guardian building and it is under protection. 2-stage round cylindrical stone tower with double gallery, painted white. There is square-shaped courtyard then it is entered to single flat lighthouse keeper house and it is reached gate of tower. Lighthouse and guardian house is being under protection as national heritage by General Directorate of Coastal Safety and Salvage Administrations. The Coastal Safety Directorate has the history of the station.

Light
The lighthouse was initially lit by kerosene, however the light source was later replaced by Dalén light using carbide (acetylene gas). Oil lamp has primarily been used and then high intense filament lamps work with LPCo as a light source. In order to be seen from the long distance by strengthen the light source, cotodiyoptric cylinder lenses which has optical distance of 500 mm as a optic system.
