È la piscina più pericolosa del mondo: lo “stagno del diavolo”, in cima alle cascate Vittoria, sull’orlo di un precipizio, 110 metri sul vuoto, con migliaia di metri cubi d’acqua che, ogni secondo, precipitano con violenza.

È come nuotare sul bordo del mondo. La vista dalla cima della cascata, così come l’esperienza, sono spettacolari: servono nervi d’acciaio, molta attenzione e chi pensa di dare una bracciata, lo faccia con molta cautela.

Per la gran parte dell’anno, chiunque si avventurasse nello “stagno del diavolo” sarebbe rapidamente scaraventato nel vuoto, tra i flutti; ma quando arriva la stagione secca, il fiume Zambesi è abbastanza sicuro da permettere di poter sguazzare nel tratto d’acqua.

Le cascate Vittoria si estendono per oltre un chilometro tra lo Zambia e lo Zimbabwe. Le guide, che accompagnano i turisti più temerari li scortano fino a una delle due piscine naturali sul lato zambese, in una zona chiamata l’isola di Livingstone.

Raggiungere lo “stagno del diavolo” non è facile: si deve camminare per 3 ore saltando da una roccia all’altra, facendo attenzione a non scivolare sulla superficie sdrucciolevole, cercando di non essere travolti dal flusso d’acqua. La scossa adrenalinica è una certezza.

THE DEVIL’S POND IN DRY SEASON

The world’s most dangerous pool, the “pond of the devil”, is on the top of the Victoria Falls, on the brink of a precipitation, 110 meters over the void, with thousands of cubic meters of water rushing violently every second.

It is like swimming on the edge of the world.The view from the top of the waterfall, as well as experience, is spectacular: you need to have steel nerves, a lot of attention and even those who like deadly challenges do it with caution.
