Food Review – Mylai Mami Samayal Food Festival at Regenta Deccan

Should Food festivals revolve only around continental cuisine……? No not necessary proved the recent food experience at Regenta Central Deccan’s Olives restaurant where Chef Arun and Kumbakonam Mrs. Prema Nambiraj ( Kumbakonam Prema mami) presented us with vegetarian nostalgic delights as a part of the Mylai Mami Samayal festival. The festival is on till May 6th – more details at the end of the review.

The immediate thought that came into our head was that of a relief that Chennai does celebrate its own cuisine with pomp and show. Very often, we face situations where people from outside Tamilnadu visit Chennai and request us to give them the option to have local food in home style. It was always a tough call and we end up hosting them in friends’ places. Regenta Deccan must be applauded for bringing in Mrs. Prema from Kumbakonam for this festival.

All kudos to chef Arun and Prema for coming out with a non-stereotypical theme. Chennai might have India’s largest pizza but in the times of a paradigm shift towards other cuisines, it is indeed a welcome move to have a food festival with a sacrosanct idea of being local and authentic.

The theme “Mylai mami samayal” revolves around  simple, holistic brahmin vegetarian food and the best part was the selection of the menu was in sync with the mylapore brahmin diaspora which is just not restricted to tamil ethnicity but an amalgamation of various sects in close proximity to each other, So a mylai maami can be a Palakkad iyer or  triplicane  madisaar maami and so is their diversity with respect to their cooking style and with no regrets, we can confidently say that the menu had it all.

We had keera vadai and bonda for the starters along with pineapple rassam as an apppetiser.

The main course was widespread including some of the not so famous ones like Bombay chutney, national kootu, and chinna oorlai. The best among them was More kozhambu and paruppu usili and the list goes on and of course it would be a crime of you don’t end a mylai maami main course without curd rice and more milagai.

The dessert section was irresistible with some hot handmade paruppu boli by Mrs.Prema herself, and the hot beetroot halwa was one to look out for. Adding to the authenticity was drinks like Nannari sarbath, panagam and neer more.

To sum it up “Mylai Maami Samayal” was authentic, holistic and last but not the least a healthier option too.
