Travel Tips – How to Stay Safe While Travelling Alone in India

India is home to some of the most amazing and stunning places to visit from all over the world. There is no doubt that there are plenty of reasons why the country is on a lot of people’s bucket list.

However, as amazing as it is, there are a few aspects that can make India a bit of a dangerous place. But there are precautions that you can take to make it much less dangerous. So don’t get discouraged due to some bad stories.

Traveling alone is also a possibility and a great adventure if you know how to do it safely. This will allow you to experience some of the best tours in India safely and to the fullest.

Below are 11 travel tips for staying safe while traveling alone in India:

  1. Get travel insurance just in case.
  2. Don´t ride a taxi or a bus alone at night to avoid issues with being robbed or getting into trouble with locals.
  3. Be friendly, people will respond better to you. If you are a woman you might want to tone it down with the smiles but still be nice.
  4. People will stare and ask for photos, it doesn’t mean that there is something wrong. However, if you are being teased and starting to feel uncomfortable leave the situation fast.
  5. Don´t be scared to go to the police if someone does something unpleasant to you. Police tend to take foreigners very seriously.
  6. Things don’t work on a regular timetable, everything is late, especially if it involves being on the road. So be patient. Except for trains, trains are on time.
  7. To get from the hotel to the hotel be sure to ask for a transfer from a large company. Drivers that answer to a boss tend to be more trustworthy.
  8. Carry copies of all of your important documents in case your luggage is lost.
  9. Don´t accept free things from strangers, especially if it is drinks or food.
  10. Follow the local dress code to avoid unwanted attention.
  11. But most importantly. Don’t be paranoid!

Enjoy your time in India, remember that for every bad new that you learn about in main media, there is a huge group of Indians angry for that one person who ruins it for everyone else.

The best thing is to use common sense.
