Disney with Kids: Taking Tweens

Disney World has something for guests of every age, and families with tween-agers are no different. What’s a tween-ager?  Tweens are kids who aren’t quite little anymore but they’re not big yet either. Maybe too cool to run up and hug Mickey but not too cool to fight Darth Vader. Sound familiar?

Don’t fall into the common misconception that Disney World is only for families with very young children. Walt Disney’s vision for his parks was that people of all ages would come and enjoy spending time together. There are advantages to taking kids of every age on a Disney vacation. As your kids grow and their interests evolve, so do your reasons for visiting Disney World. Today, we’re exploring 6 reasons why Disney with tweens makes for a wonderful adventure for the entire family!

  1. You can cover a lot of ground pretty quickly with 9 and 10 year old legs (versus dodging in and out of crowds or parking and un-parking that huge double stroller from a few years ago).
  2. They’re able to stay up a little later and make it through the day without naps – late night fun at Disney is something we’ve never been able to take advantage of with little ones.
  3. Older kids tend to be less picky eaters and this means that the whole family can take advantage of some of the more interesting, off-the-beaten path restaurants that Disney has to offer.
  4. Tweens are capable of managing (and carrying) their own spending money for souvenirs. Score!
  5. Half the fun for me is planning the details of the trip and kids this age love to help. Give each kid a day to be in charge of the plans and let them be boss for a day!
  6. Check out different resorts – older kids won’t miss the “larger than life” theming at Value resorts. Now that they’re out of daycare, splurge for that moderate or deluxe room if you can.

The best news of all is that they’re still young AND young at heart! At almost 40, I still love riding Dumbo and all my worries melt away when I am immersed in the magic of Disney World. Regardless of how big they get, I hope my kids always maintain the same child-like love of Disney World.

Candice was raised in east Tennessee. While in college, her best friend dragged her to a Walt Disney World College Program recruiting session at the University of Tennessee and the rest is Disney history. In the Fall of 1999, Candice became a quick service food hostess for Sunset Ranch Market and Fantasmic at Disney-MGM Studios – or what is now known as Disney’s Hollywood Studios. While soaking up her time as a cast member, she met Ryan, a neighbor and a fellow college programmer who worked as a custodial host at Epcot. Four years later, Candice moved to the Midwest and married that boy from across the hall. They now live in Greenwood, Indiana with their two little boys. The Disney-loving foursome took their first family trip to The Happiest Place on Earth in 2013 and Candice is eagerly planning their return. Candice also works full-time at a community mental health center and enjoys taking photographs and blogging at Mommy in the Midwest.
