Guraidhoo is another inhabited local island, which is rather small, but very inviting. It is a part of Thaa Atoll. Guraidhoo is 35 km away from Male and about 8 km away from Maafushi – another inhabited island located in the atoll. It’s 700m in length and 500m in width. The population is about 1800.
A view of the neighboring resort from the beach.
Now there are 7 guest houses and hotels on the island, some more hotels are being built. There is a resort nearby – Holiday Inn Resort Kandooma Maldives. The distance between the resort and Guraidhoo is just 100 m, but it’s not so easy to get there, because the security will not allow you to do that.
Activities in Guraidhoo
You can reach a small picturesque uninhabited island located not far from Guraidhoo either by getting there by boat or by wading. In addition, there are several places where you can engage in various water sports, and one of these sports is surfing:
In the Maldives there are not a lot of points for surfing, because much depends on the structure of the atolls. It is believed that the most opportune time for surfing is from May till October, i.e. during the raining season. Waves are the highest at that time.
And, of course, diving. One of the most popular destinations is Guraidhoo Kandu. The point is an underwater reef, the top of which lies at a depth of 10 m from the surface and reaches the bottom at a depth of 30 m. The best place for diving is near the outer side of the reef. The reef is completely covered with colorful hard and soft corals. You can also find caves and overhangs on its surface.

On the whole, the island has quite a developed infrastructure. There are a lot of gift shops and mini-markets, where you can buy yoghurts, cookies, etc. There are a few local restaurants, where the dishes of the Maldivian cuisine are served.
I’d recommend you not to spend all the time only on this island. Visit the neighbouring local islands Gulhi and Maafushi. Go the resorts, luckily there are many of them nearby. There is a local ferry , by which you can go to the Maafushi or Gulhi in the morning and get back in the evening.

A speedboat trip to Guraidhoo takes about 35 minutes and costs $350 (one way; sharing is allowed). The trip is to be booked at least 3 days before departure.
