Step away from the hustle and bustle for a day, and check out our top picks for some fun off the beaten track in Hawke’s Bay.
Shine Falls
This spot is well off the beaten track as it is situated approx 1.5 hours drive away from the Colonial Lodge Motel, but well worth the effort for a day trip out. We think it is a beautiful walking track ( 1.5 hours return) as it takes hikers through a lowland Forrest until you reach the waterfall. Take your family and spend the day. Or enjoy a romantic swim with a loved one in the base water and soak in the view of the 58m high Waterfall. Sensible shoes and a bottle of water are recommended for this outing.

Taumatawhakatangi
Otatara Pa Historic Reserve
This hidden gem is a lot closer to home, just up the road from the Colonial Lodge Motel. The historic reserve offers spectacular views all the way out to Cape Kidnappers and on a clear day you may even see Mount Ruapahu. This is a 33 hectare reserve formed 25 years ago and gives great insight into Maori history. Let us know if you are interested in visiting and we can point you in the right direction.
Birdwoods Gallery
This is a countryside Cafe, Gallery and Sweet shop located just a 20 minute drive the motel. The old fashioned sweets, sculpture garden and outdoor terrace are a great way to spend an enjoyable afternoon in Hawke’s Bay. The buildings themselves are a beautiful site with the gallery being an old Church Hall built in 1894 and the sweet shop is housed in a colonial cottage. Your kids will love you forever after an afternoon at Birdwoods!
The Chook and Filly Cafe and Bar
Maraekakaho’s place to be. In fact, it’s just about the only thing there. Open since 2005 this is a stunning place for the whole family to dine in the country. They are fully licensed and offer a range of craft and traditional beers along with a number of other dining options. If you like a typical country pub with stunning views then this is worth the 30 minute drive from Colonial Lodge Motel.
Waipatiki Beach
This is one of Napier’s most picturesque beaches, a 30 minute drive from Napier the beach is nestled in native bush and surrounded by golden sand. There is a picnic area and toilets so you can settle in for a day of swimming, sunbathing and exploring the 64ha of coastal Forrest that houses a number of our native birds. It is a local family favorite and worth the drive.
