The Maldives is probably one of the most beautiful places in the world where you can enjoy various types of fishing. Best known for its stunning beaches, luxurious resorts and powder white sands, it is also home to numerous species of fish, both big and small, making it an ideal location for fishing! Anyone who wants to try their hand at fishing will find plenty of opportunities around the archipelagos, as well as several registered fishing guides that can point you in the right direction. Even well-known resorts, such as the Adaaran Club Rannalhi, for example, a private Maldives Island resort, can arrange fishing excursions for enthusiastic guests.

Big game fishing provides a livelihood to many Maldivians, and in addition, draws a large crowd of tourists. Commonly seen fish in the open waters around the atolls are tuna, groupers, barracuda, squirrelfish, rainbow runner, trevally and much more. To get the most out of your big game fishing experience, you should ideally be using top-notch equipment. Most places will offer a selection of fishing equipment and will provide lessons on how to use them properly; however it’s always a good idea to have some basic knowledge of your own. Basic equipment for big game includes a fishing rod, line, reel and tackle; along with the usual items like hook, weight and bait. For larger fish, you might need a chum bucket, these are used for holding chopped bait like smaller fish, which in turn attracts larger fish.
Rods designed specifically for big game have roller guides made of tough steel which are ideally suited for trolling and standing. If you’re a lightweight and inexperienced, your guide might ask you to wear a stand-up belt. The belt is used to rest the end of the rod, evenly distributing its weight and providing better leverage when tussling with a catch. When it comes to hooks, there’s an endless number to choose from, the best way to decide which works best for the situation is to speak to your guide. Whatever you decide on, the marine life in these waters is considered to be strong, so be prepared for a fight and plenty of fun.
