Giro d’Italia 2017 in Sardinia

The 100th edition of the Giro d’Italia will start from Alghero in Sardinia on May 5 2017. To celebrate properly this edition, the management has organized a route that will cover many Italian regions.

This is the third time that the Giro has started in this astonishing island of Mediterranean Sea and undoubtedly it was a success in the previous editions.

Moreover, Sardinia is the homeland of the popular Italian cyclist Fabio Aru and the first Sardinian sportsman to dress the “maglia rosa” at the Giro d’Italia.

So, the first three stages will be held in Sardinia; the route is as follows: first stage Alghero-Olbia (203 kilometres), second stage Olbia- Tortolì (208 kilometres) and third stage Tortolì-Cagliari (148 kilometres). All three stages are suitable mainly for sprinters and finisseurs.

First stage Alghero-Olbia (May 5)

The first stage of the route will pass through Alghero and the northern roads of the island to Olbia characterized by an endless sequence of ups and downs.

The last part of the route culminates in a 20-kilometre climb ideal to finisseurs in a way that they can anticipate the actions of the sprinters who, in turn, will be favorited for the final sprint in Olbia.

Second stage Olbia-Tortolì (May 6)

On the second day of the tour the cyclists will be busy once again in a mountain stage which involves ups and downs through the villages of Orune, Bitti and towards Nuoro downtown with a final sprint.

If you follow the tour you will notice that the inner Sardinian villages are as charming as the most coastal popular ones.

Second stage Olbia-Tortolì (May 6)

Third stage Tortolì-Cagliari (May 7)

The final stage of the Giro in Sardinia is to be run towards the capital city Cagliari and it is basically a flat stage with few minor hills alongside the way and mostly close to the village of Villasimius.
