Diving with Manta Rays in the Maldives – A Truly Unforgettable Experience!

Swimming along with these gentle and peaceful creatures of the deep will prove to be an unforgettable underwater adventure. Read on to find out more…

The Experience

Gliding along with these gentle giants imparts a sense of peace and most divers fall in love with them. Unlike the dangerous sting greys with venomous spines, Manta Rays are perfectly harmless and actually enjoy human company.

Where to Try It

If you wish to interact with these fascinating creatures, heading to Hanifaru, a beautiful lagoon off an uninhabited island in the Maldives is your best bet. Since feedings are never guaranteed, interested parties can sign up for ”manta alerts” during the season while finding accommodation at many a hotel near Hanifaru Bay including the likes of Milaidhoo Island Maldives.

Best Time to Try It

These filter feeders congregate in the bay during the south-west monsoon between the months of May and November and if the tides and the winds are right, they enter a shallow cul de sac area in the reefs to hunt for food. On certain days especially during the ones closer to a full moon, the bay can attract up to over 100 manta Rays.

Tips to Remember

Approach slowly and avoid making too much noise. It’s very important to respect their space and maintain at least a distance of 5 feet from them to keep interaction at its minimum. When taking photographs make sure not to point the flash directly at their eyes.
