Coral Reefs in Maldives – An Underwater Paradise

Known as an all year-round prime diving destination of the Indian Ocean, Maldives is home to one of the most diverse marine ecosystems in the world. When on holiday to the Maldives, Coral reef exploration is a top activity to engage in. Coral Reefs are spectacular in their appearance and play a role in protecting the shores from erosion. Those who may like to engage in preserving these beautiful treasures may take part in a coral adoption programme offered by resorts such as the Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas.

Corals can be recognized as a form of polyps categorized under invertebrates. Corals get their beautiful colours from the process of ‘symbiosis’ with algae which produces oxygen and various other nutrients. They are usually always visible to the surface of the water as they require sunlight for photosynthesis. Being situated at the surface of the water allows corals to receive plankton through constant movement of water. The growth of these corals has been attributed to the heavy monsoonal rain showers experienced in the area. These Reefs act as a natural barrier to the waves and results in water that is rich in nutrients. All these nutrients act as an agent of growth for coral life.

The reefs are made up of a combination of calcium accumulated from sea water. These tiny structures grow into larger carbonate structures over the years. Coral reefs are also a nursery area to approximately 25% of the marine species. They are widely known for being very attractive to the eye as well.

The local economy too depends on the income the reefs generate through tourists who flock to witness these aquatic marvels. The reefs also act as a protective barrier to the many islands and its many coastal communities from harsh natural conditions. The coral reefs of the Maldives can be discovered by a glass boat ride or even by snorkeling and diving into the waters.
