Udta Punjab

In the state of Punjab the desire to emigrate to prosperous countries is so well entrenched in its population that there exists a "hawai jahaj / aeroplane gurdwara" in Talhan village about 10 kms from Jalandhar on NH-1. Just ask for the "Hawai Jahaz Gurdwara" or the "Aeroplane Gurdwara", and you'll be promptly guided to it.

Strange it may sound though but this Gurudwara has made people believe that if they wish to go abroad, offer prayers along with a toy aeroplane and it will be answered.

The belief has become so widespread that no one now calls it by its real name Shaheed Baba Nihal Singh Gurdwara. It is known far and wide as the Hawai Jahaj gurdwara or the aeroplane gurdwara.

The Gurudwara was set up in memory of saint Nihal Singh, about whom neither the management of the gurudwara nor the villagers know much. The Gurudwara is being managed by the government following a dispute between the Jats and Dailts of the village. Both the communities wanted major control in the management of the shrine and even led to riots.

The markets around the gurudwara have a lot of shops selling toy planes of various sizes and colors. Models of Airbus, Boeings and all the other aircrafts are found in these markets. The aeroplanes are sold at a price of Rs. 50-500.

According to one of the local shopkeeper, “Surely it must have been someone’s wish to go abroad coming true that must have started it all. It’s now become a tradition. For us it’s business.”

So many aeroplanes are offered by devotees here. The offerings are holy. Gurudwara is now running out of space, so instead of storing them here, the management distributes the toy planes to the kids.
