Chris Benoit… Ten Years Later

This is just my personal opinion on this subject. Those who know me know that I have been a pro wrestling fan since my childhood. This individual pictured-Christopher Michael Benoit-was one of the newcomers in the late 80s that I’d see in passing, but it wasn’t until the 90s that his career really shot off.

On June 24, 2007, Benoit, his wife Nancy, and their son Daniel was found dead in their suburban Atlanta home. To this very day, there remains speculation as to his longtime steroid abuse which led to a possible premature demented state, was he murdered, and the public was led to believe that it was a murder-suicide, his marriage to another wrestler’s wife which later caused strife in his personal life, who knows?

It’s sad. Such raw talent this man had, wasted! Hard to believe a decade has passed since then, and folks-myself included-wants to believe that it was a setup, but the reality is that if Benoit did do this, he really blew any possible chance of a reconciliation with God.

Again, this is my opinion, people!

But the signs are there. WWE at the time had RAW, and SmackDown, and ECW (in its final run), Benoit was working his way down despite the pops (cheers from the crowd), he just didn’t measure up to the success he had in WCW as well as his earlier runs in WWF during the WCW invasion. His marriage was in trouble, his career was at a standstill, and he was still coming to grips-or struggling to-dealing with the death of his friend Eddie Guerrero. I think that was the straw that had broken the camel’s back.

His childhood hero growing up was British wrestler Tom Billington (AKA The Dynamite Kid, one half of The British Bulldogs), and he even said that Benoit was an idiot for those senseless murders, to this day, many wrestlers and entertainers have mixed emotions. And think about this; one of the biggest taboos in this business, in life period, is to get involved with another man’s wife. Long story short, Kevin Sullivan had written a story where his then-wife Nancy and Benoit (who was either married or divorced at the time) ended up having a real-life affair. I really think that was the beginning of the end for him.

Which also showed poor judgment on Sullivan’s part knowing that a compromise was about to happen.

You then start at the top and work your way down to a former Indy corporation that was virtually a sinking ship. Again, the signs are there. Sid Eudy (AKA Sid Vicious) even linked depression to the issues he was facing.

I could only imagine how Eddie would feel knowing this man had done the things that he did. To this day, I don’t wanna accept that an athlete would kill his wife, his son with Down Syndrome, and himself. But if it did happen, my opinion is the same as the others.

Unacceptable, ungodly, unforgivable.

Kinda like O. J.

Yes, I think he’s guilty, and even he would say that Benoit was an idiot!

Roman Polanski would probably say likewise as well!

And now, here’s an excerpt from WikiPedia:

“…After the double-murder suicide, former wrestler Christopher Nowinski contacted Michael Benoit, father of Chris Benoit, suggesting that years of trauma to his son’s brain may have led to his actions. Tests were conducted on Benoit’s brain by Julian Bailes, the head of neurosurgery at West Virginia University, and results showed that “Benoit’s brain was so severely damaged it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer’s patient.”[119] He was reported to have had an advanced form of dementia, similar to the brains of four retired NFL players who had suffered multiple concussions, sank into depression, and harmed themselves or others. Bailes and his colleagues concluded that repeated concussions can lead to dementia, which can contribute to severe behavioural problems.[119] Benoit’s father suggests that brain damage may have been the leading cause of the crime.[120] He confirmed that his son was quietly cremated, but what was done with the ashes is not public knowledge.[121]”

I still want to think otherwise about Chris Benoit, it is what it is.

Till next time,

Namaste.
