Top 10 Weirdest Types of Insurance You Won’t Believe Exist

The world is a scary place. Insurance is one of those things that help to make it a little less scary.

If your house burns down, you’ll get a payout to help you start over. If you’re in a car accident, insurance will usually cover your medical expenses and maybe even help pay for a new car.

But what if you’re worried about something not so common? You might be surprised how many different types of insurance there are. Here are 10 of the strangest policies you can take out.

1. Cold Feet Insurance

Are you shelling out tons of money for your kid’s wedding? Are you also concerned that either your child or their fiance will get cold feet and you’ll be left holding the bill?

Well, there’s an insurance for that. There are restrictions such as the wedding has to be called off a year in advance. Also, these policies can’t be paid out to the bride or groom, only the parents or another party that may be paying for the wedding.

But think about how much weddings cost these days. The average cost hovers around $25,000! It could be worth it if you think the budding romance isn’t as solid as it seems.

2. Alien Abduction Insurance

Getting abducted by aliens seems like a crazy idea. Taking out an Insurance Policy on it seems even crazier. But the world is full of crazy people that do crazy things. So, if you want to protect yourself in the event of an alien abduction, you can do it.

If you ever do get to cash in, though, it may be a little difficult to prove your case. Be sure to snap a few pictures while inside the spaceship.

3. Kidnapping Insurance

You can also buy insurance for kidnapping by real, live human beings. This is still statistically unlikely, but a lot more probable than getting kidnapped by aliens.

It is most common for businesses with high-profile employees to take out these kinds of policies. But there are plenty of high-profile individuals who are concerned about kidnapping issues as well.

4. Lottery Insurance

This is another type of insurance Policy that businesses may decide to take out. Imagine what you would do if you won the lottery. Chances are, you might quit your job (or at least take a long vacation) and go do something you enjoy.

Now imagine what would happen to a business if all or most of their employees hit the jackpot at the same time? They would take a serious hit to their bottom line. Luckily, businesses can take out a policy that will pay to help them find and train new workers quickly.

5. Keyman Insurance

Alternatively, companies may have one or a handful of “key” employees. Without the unique contribution of those employees, they could suffer a serious financial slump.

To protect against this, companies can take out an insurance policy to cover them if that key person ever decides to go their own way. The policy will pay out to cover the loss of business as well as training costs for a new employee.

6. Body Part Insurance

You may have heard of people taking out insurance for body parts. There are quite a few celebrities that have taken out policies to cover their most prized assets, which could very well be a body part.

For example, the singer Bruce Springsteen took out a policy to cover his unique voice for $6 million. If he ever loses his ability to sing, at least he won’t be out on the street!

It might surprise you to know just how many celebrities have lost it all. Maybe an insurance policy isn’t a bad idea.

7. Hole-In-One Prize Insurance

You know those charity sporting events where you can win a car or something else amazing by performing an incredible feat? Like landing a hole-in-one or making a half-court shot in basketball?

Well, tournament organizers often don’t actually expect anyone to win. So they might take out an insurance policy to cover the prize just in case somebody does.

8. Death by Laughter Insurance

Death by laughter doesn’t seem like too bad of a way to go, does it? But it also seems a little unlikely.

At least one comedy troupe was so confident in their abilities they were concerned it could actually happen. They decided to take out an insurance policy just in case an audience member ended up laughing their way to the pearly gates.

Even if you’re not too worried about death by laughter, extra medical insurance isn’t necessarily a bad idea. Sometimes a Medicare supplement is just what you need.

9. Multiple Birth Insurance

Children are such a blessing, but they can also be expensive. What do you do if you’ve budgeted for one and then find out you’re having twins or even triplets?

Why, you take out multiple birth insurance, of course! These policies can be a good idea if you have a family history of having twins since the feat tends to run in families. It can also be a good idea if you’ve already had a multiple birth and the new additions could prove to be overwhelming.

10. Pig Insurance

Did you know that you can take out pig insurance? And cow, and duck, and mice, and chicken. These policies are for people who have what is typically considered a farm animal as a pet.

You may need pet insurance for a beloved dog or cat in the event of an emergency. Your pet pig is just as important, so why wouldn’t you be able to take out a policy to cover him as well?

Many Types of Insurance

As you can see, there are many types of insurance that can cover anything from the unusual to the downright ridiculous. But life is full of surprises and you never know what can happen. It’s best to be prepared even if what you’re concerned about may not seem that likely to happen.
