Could you rent out a room in your home or your garage, or even your driveway?

Depending on where you live, and the size of your house, you might be able to rent out a room to a student, or your unused garage to someone looking for somewhere to store their classic car.

You might be able to rent out your drive as a parking space during the week too

This extra income could be used to pay off bills, save for a vacation or treat the children, or help you in your retirement.

Why not ask locally, or see if there’s a website to find out more?

3. Are you struggling in a tiny city center apartment?

Is you rent high because you live in the city center

For what you pay for your city center apartment you might be able to have a larger suburban house for the same or lower rent.

Perhaps an extra bedroom and a garage would be handy and not cost any more money.

4. Do you need to be right in the city centre?

What if you could get a bigger house in the suburbs for less rent?

Moving to a smaller house in the suburbs could save you money on rent or mortgage.

If you’re prepared to travel, or don’t need to be in the heart of the city, you could make significant savings.

 5. Do you need to be in the suburbs?

Moving to the city center might actually save you time and money

Moving to an apartment in the city might cost more in rent, but walking to work instead of needing a second car or taking the train, could actually save you time and money, making it better value.

This is another one of our great home and garden money saving tips.

6. Could you reduce your heating bills?

What could you do to reduce yoru heating bills?

Instead of heating all of the rooms in your home, maybe you could use fewer rooms in the winter, and so save some money.

Maybe you can keep doors shut, think about improving your insulation and making your home air-tight to save money.

Reminding your children to shut the door and put a sweater on when it’s cold instead for moaning that it’s cold and asking for the heating to be turned up, can save you  money.

7. Could you open your windows more in the summer?

Opening your windows can cool your home as well as let you enjoy the smells and sounds of summer

In the summer, why not open your windows more instead of keeping your windows closed and using your air conditioning so much?

Perhaps you’ll spend more time in your garden or out with the kids and not notice how hot it is inside during the day.

This may seem one of the more obvious home and garden money saving tips, but you’d be surprised how many people reach fro the AC before the window.

8. How efficient and effective is your heating and air conditioning?

Is your heating or air conditioning working as well as it should be?

Now might be a good time to see if your heating and air conditioning are as efficient and effective as they could and should be.

Maybe there are newer models and systems that offer better results with lower operating costs.

A simple service or a few tweaks, or  complete new system, might be what’s needed to make your home warmer  in the winter and colder in the summer.

Why not look around, ask friends and family and speak to an HVAC engineer to see if you can save money on your heating and air conditioning?

9. Do you really need all that furniture and those garden tools?

When was the last time you used all of those garden tools in your garage?

If not, or you rarely use them, then why not sell them?

Perhaps you’ve got:

  • Lots of mismatched furniture or broken tools
  • Plant pots that never get used
  • Kids outdoor toys that they’ve outgrown and haven’t been played with for years

What else is there in your garage or garden you could get rid of too?

10. Could you share the cost of expensive items?

Could you share the cost of big items like snow blowers or lawn mowers

If you’re looking to purchase expensive items for your home or garden like a lawnmower or snow blower, why not ask your neighbors or other family members if they’d share the cost with you?

You might be able to get something better, and sooner, whilst spending less money.
