Depending on where you live, and the size of your house, you might be able to rent out a room to a student, or your unused garage to someone looking for somewhere to store their classic car.

3. Are you struggling in a tiny city center apartment?

For what you pay for your city center apartment you might be able to have a larger suburban house for the same or lower rent.

Perhaps an extra bedroom and a garage would be handy and not cost any more money.

Moving to a smaller house in the suburbs could save you money on rent or mortgage.

If you’re prepared to travel, or don’t need to be in the heart of the city, you could make significant savings.

Moving to an apartment in the city might cost more in rent, but walking to work instead of needing a second car or taking the train, could actually save you time and money, making it better value.

Now might be a good time to see if your heating and air conditioning are as efficient and effective as they could and should be.

Maybe there are newer models and systems that offer better results with lower operating costs.

A simple service or a few tweaks, or  complete new system, might be what’s needed to make your home warmer  in the winter and colder in the summer.

Why not look around, ask friends and family and speak to an HVAC engineer to see if you can save money on your heating and air conditioning?

9. Do you really need all that furniture and those garden tools?

If not, or you rarely use them, then why not sell them?

Perhaps you’ve got:

• Lots of mismatched furniture or broken tools
• Plant pots that never get used
• Kids outdoor toys that they’ve outgrown and haven’t been played with for years

What else is there in your garage or garden you could get rid of too?

10. Could you share the cost of expensive items?

If you’re looking to purchase expensive items for your home or garden like a lawnmower or snow blower, why not ask your neighbors or other family members if they’d share the cost with you?

You might be able to get something better, and sooner, whilst spending less money.
