Job Tip for Actors: Getting a day job that still allows you to audition

Getting a day job that still allows you to audition
By Explore Talent Editor Greg McKibben

You really hate your dumb job. Right? Of course you do—you’re making squat. On top of that, you probably even have tasks at work that no one would find enjoyable—like latrine duty. You’d much rather be using your talents as an artist to make Money but like those that have gone before you, your dues must be paid first.

Consider switching to the food service profession so you have shorter days with some flexibility on schedule changing. It’s no coincidence that most actors are servers. The typical shift is only about 5 hours long and if you work nights, you make more money and can do auditions during the day.

Bartending can also be a good job but the hours tend to be a little longer. Also, if you sling drinks in a restaurant, it won’t pay as much as waiting tables would. For those interested in making more money, buy some earplugs and go bartend at a club instead.
