Bit By The Teen Acting Bug?
By Explore Editor, Greg McKibben

If you’ve caught the acting bug at an early age, you’re lucky in the fact that you have a head start over others who don’t often realize their calling until they’re older.

So being a teenager, what do you do with this sudden interest in acting? The first thing you should do is take some classes to see if acting is really right for you. Many teens will get into classes and find out they have trouble memorizing their lines or realize that acting isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Some may just want the challenge of getting in front of a bunch of people to overcome shyness but realize they don’t want to do this for a career.

Of course, you won’t know what you want out of acting until you take a class and actually get up on that stage.

So where do you take these classes? The best place to start would be the junior high or high school you’re presently attending because these classes are free and offer a relaxed, uncompetitive atmosphere to see if acting is something you like doing.

If your junior high or high school doesn’t have a drama department, there are other alternatives. Privately owned schools or workshops offer classes which have more experienced professors who go by the term, “acting coaches”--some who are still working in the industry.

Once in awhile, they will give free acting lessons for an hour or two to advertise the school. Take advantage of these offers to get your first taste of acting from working professionals to see if you want to spend the money to take intensives for serious actors.
