Homemade Vegan Queso

Cheesy queso is a favorite classic appetizer at Mexican restaurants. To still enjoy the spicy cheesy dip, I recreated it at home using Nutritional Yeast as the base to create a cheesy flavor. It takes less than 20 minutes to prepare this cheesy appetizer, perfect for when you need a fast party appetizer or quick side dish to go with you meal. This vegan queso is nut free, nuts can be used to thicken sauces. But for this sauce, it is thickened with a vegan roux of vegan butter and flour. Serve with your favorite tortilla chips, or you can even make your own. This queso is cheesy and spicy, it tastes just like traditional queso sauce. Serve as an appetizer to any tex-mex meal.

Nutritional yeast is the key ingredient in this recipe that creates the traditional cheesy flavor in the queso. The sauce is started by melting vegan butter in a large saucepan over medium heat. Cook minced garlic in the butter until fragrant. Whisk in flour and cook for another minute to brown. This creates a roux that will help thicken the sauce. Pour in almond milk along with nutritional yeast, hot sauce, salt and pepper. Continue to cook over medium heat, while whisking constantly until the sauce has thickened. Pour the mixture into a large bowl and serve with tortilla chips.

Homemade Vegan Queso

  • 2 tablespoons vegan butter
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk
  • 1/2 cup nutritional yeast
  • 1/2 cup hot sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground black pepper
  1. In a large saucepan over medium heat, melt vegan butter. Add minced garlic and cook until fragrant. Add flour and whisk until browned.

  2. Add almond milk, nutritional yeast, hot sauce, salt and pepper. Continue to cook over medium heat, whisking constantly until thickened. Serve with tortilla chips.
