For the first time on the Tortilla Channel my post in English is different from my Dutch post. Today I am sharing a Dutch treat that is all about the birthday of Sinterklaas on the 5th of December. I’m showing you how to make peppernut Homemade Nutella Macarons. These peppernuts are nice and crunchy. When you’ve had one, you will not be able to resist and want more and more until they are gone. Promise! So ready to learn how you can make peppernut homemade Nutella macarons? Lets get started!

Just as Santa Claus at Christmas we have Sinterklaas celebration which is fest for children. Sinterklaas is accompanied with a lot of treats like chocolate capital letters, speculaas (spiced bisquit), marzipan, banquet letter and peppernuts.

Peppernuts are shared by Sinterklaas when visiting the children. The peppernuts are small crunchy cookie treats. They are made with a number of spices, vegetable butter, self-raising flour and sugar syrup. In the Netherlands I can buy peppernut spices which is what I use but you can make your own peppernut spices rather easily by combining:

  • 2 tsp cardamom
  • 2 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp grounded cloves
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 tsp nutmeg
  • 1 tsp ginger powder

All you then need to do is put 250 grams of self-raising flower in a bowl, add the spices with 200 grams of sugar syrup and finally 100 grams of cold butter. Knead into a cookie dough ball with cold hands and let it rest in the fridge for at least 1 hour.

Cut the cookie dough into four equal pieces. Roll into a cigar shape of about 1 inch thick. Then cut into 1 inch pieces. Roll each piece into a ball. You will get about 48 to 50 large peppernuts.

Put on a baking tray and leave some room between each peppernut. Bake in a pre heated oven at 350℉ and bake for about 20 minutes. Let them cool so they can get crunchy before you put some homemade Nutella between two peppernuts and create a peppernut macaron. These peppernuts are the best and you can also eat the solo if you are out of Nutella.

Store them in a cookie jar for about 4 days but I doubt if they will last that long.
