The Blockbuster Musical ‘Miss Saigon’ Tour at Cadillac Palace Theatre

The famous Cameron Mackintosh creation “Miss Saigon” depicting the story of the fall of Saigon and an ill-fated romance that matured in those time finally made a stop for whole four weeks at Chicago’s Cadillac Palace Theatre on Wednesday, 14th November and stays in theaters till Saturday, 8 December.

The musical is an updated version of the Giacomo Puccini’s opera “Madame Butterfly” and is a tragic story of Asian women and her love for an American Soldier who deserted her. The staging of the story reflects the Vietnam War Period.

Joining the stage are the actors like Christine Bunuan, who made her debut in the supporting role of Gigi the bar girl in her first professional tour. She started her career in Vacaville, California. Along with her is the Aurora native actor Alexander Aguilar who plays the role of an American Soldier and various other roles here and there.

Behind the scenes the work of composer, lyricist, and actor Michel Mahler is apparent as the Naperville native display his skills in the best way he knows of. He has been mentioned in the credits for arranging additional lyrics for Claude-Michel Schonberg and Alain Boublil’s “Les Miserables” original scores. He has also shown his talent in some of the works of famous English lyricist Richard Maltby Jr. like “Baby” and “Closer Than Ever”

Mahler at present is playing a starring role in the premiere of “Holiday Inn” at the Marriott Theatre in Lincolnshire. He first caught Schonberg and Boublil’s attention when he worked for the English translation of one of their 1970’s rock opera “La Révolution Française”.

It was quite a surprise for Mahler to be asked to work on “Miss Saigon” 2014 London Revival. According to Mahler, Schonberg and Boublil were looking for a younger’s perspective, the American audience were losing their interest in the show and they could use some of the modern outlooks to bring it back in concentration.

Bunuan was very much interested in “Miss Saigon” from the start having the original star of the show Lea Salonga as inspiration. She wished to be like her in acting and singing and also was wishing to even be a fly to see the show in detail according to her own words. She had worked with Mahler as a co-star regional premiere of “Honeymoon in Vegas” and as soon as she knew he was working in “Miss Saigon” she started asking questions about the show without knowing that someday she herself was going to star in the show.

In fact, she was lucky enough to be able to work with the creator of the story Claude-Michel Schonberg and the director Laurence Connor.

Aguilar also knew of Mahler and did not miss to boost of this when he got cast for the “Miss Saigon” in 2017 as a replacement for about 23 different stage roles.

Here are Aguilar’s thoughts on his dozens of a role in the musical:

“It was like being a ‘theater fireman.’ You wait in the dressing room and at any point, you go on — right before the show starts or sometimes in the middle of a show” he said.

Thought the tours have been a bit more relaxing for the actor as he now has his own set of parts to play.

Both the actors are eager to come back to Chicago to bring the first time Broadway-size theater show at Cadillac Palace Theatre and of course to meet their friends and family too.

“All these people know how epic Miss Saigon is, and its importance in my life as it started everything for me,” Bunuan said. “To share a story like this on one of those Loop stages is pretty incredible.”
