It’s a Bird, It’s a Plane, It’s… a Blood Sample?

There was a time, not long ago, that we were blown away by same-day delivery. In the future it appears that delivery-in-hours will be a given; the only question will be who, or what, will execute the delivery.

Next month, drones will begin making medical deliveries in urban areas of Switzerland. Logistics company Matternet will use an autonomous drone network to fly small items (like blood samples) between hospitals. It’s not a prototype or a test; it’s a fully operational network. The drones can fly about 12 miles before they need to land and change their own batteries.

Matternet, based in California, is hoping to expand throughout Europe, and says grocery stores could be next.

Catch the Credit Card Skimmers on Your Phone

People are understandably growing increasingly more paranoid about the security of their personal and financial information. Looking at you, Equifax.

Luckily, the good guys are working on security measures (hopefully) as quickly as the bad guys are trying to steal your information. The Skimmer Scanner app launched on Android this week, which detects technology that skimmers use to grab your Credit card information at gas pumps. It’s actually pretty interesting how it works, detecting the bluetooth technology that feeds credit card numbers in plain text to the culprits.

The Change Management Award Goes to…

The feel-good story of the week is seven-year-old Hailey Dawson from Las Vegas. She was born without three fingers on her right hand due to Poland syndrome. There’s almost no market for pediatric prosthetics since they’re expensive and kids grow out of them, so it seemed Hailey was out of luck. Then her mother asked engineering students at UNLV (with access to a 3-D printer) if they could help.

They developed multiple options, all with nearly full dexterity. In fact, the prosthetics are effective enough for Hailey to grip a baseball, which she has done for the ceremonial first pitch at several Major League games. This year, she’ll throw the first pitch at game four of the World Series thanks to her persistent mother and some motivated college students.
