Initially released on January 4th, 2016, by Supercell, Clash Royale is a freemium mobile strategy game which combines the elements of tower defense, multiplayer online battle arena, and collectible card game. The game was released globally on March 2nd, 2016. With over a hundred million downloads on Android and IOS, Clash Royale is already among the highest grossing games on mobile phones.
Gameplay
The mechanics of Clash Royale is quite simple. You have to play against other players in the game with a deck of eight cards. In Clash Royale, elixir is the card currency. Each card has a number on it depicting the amount of elixir required to summon the card. Every card has its own pros and cons, which have to be weighed when selecting the cards for your deck.
To find a game on Clash Royale takes a couple of seconds and each game lasts for three minutes. Each player in the game has three towers. The objective of the game is to prevent the opponent from destroying your towers while you try to take out the opposition’s towers. The player who destroys the most number of the towers (or all) at the end of the time limit is the winner. After two minutes, the production of elixir doubles.
If you and your opponent destroyed the same number of towers or if there were no towers destroyed, the game enters overtime. You are given an additional minute to complete the objective. If you are unable to do so, the game ends in a tie.
League
Every time you win a game, you get crowns. Based on the number of crowns you have, you get placed into leagues. As you win more games, you will get promoted to the higher leagues. At present, there are 10 leagues in Clash Royale. The last one is called the Ultimate Champion League.
Chests
There are 14 types of chests you get in the game.

- Clan Battle
These chests contain cards, gold, and gems. You get the chests by either winning battles or purchasing them from the shop. To unlock chests, you need to wait for a given amount of time. Depending on the type of chest, the time varies accordingly. The rarer the chest, the better cards you will get. Every four hours, you get a free chest. The timer for the free chest will stop after you have accumulated two chests. After you open them, the timer will reset.
Clans
One of the best features of the game is the ability to form clans (teams) with players all over the world. You can either create a clan with specifications for eligibility or you can join one. Each clan can have a maximum of fifty members. Clan mates can request for cards and battle each other for practice. A recent update allows two clan members to battle other players. This is one of the best updates so far as the game can take a lot of unexpected turns. Every week, clan mates can pool in their trophies to unlock a chest that has a large number of cards.
Verdict
Even though the game seems fairly simple to play, it is extremely challenging. Players have a lot to think about before they deploy cards in battles. Each card has its own set of pros and cons, making it a fair game. The game also receives updates on a regular basis, which fixes bugs and adds more content to the game. By far, Clash Royale is one the few freemium games where players are not at a disadvantage if they don’t spend money (real) to buy cards, gems, and gold.
Supercell did a magnificent job in creating Clash Royale. If you want a game that will keep you hooked for months to come or even years, Clash Royale is for you.
