What Causes Steering Wheel Shakes?

Steering wheel shakes are both irritating and highly dangerous at both low and high speeds. Tires

The most common reason for a car to shake is imbalanced tires. If the tires are out of balance, then the steering wheel can shake. The shaking starts at around 50-55 miles per hour (mph). The problem progressively gets worse at 60 mph, but the vehicle's performance becomes smooth as you drive faster.

Brake Rotors

If you feel a pulsing in the Brake pedal and a wobbling of the steering wheel when slowing at highway speeds, your rotors could be warped or worn out. When you step on the brake, and the brake pads press down on the rotors, the rotors become extremely hot. The heat causes the rotors to wear down worn, warped, and uneven over time. Since your brake pads press onto a surface that isn’t smooth, braking and steering the vehicle won’t feel smooth either.

Brake Caliper

Another common auto problem that can cause shaking is a sticking brake caliper. When the caliper stick, you will experience a vibration through the steering wheel starting at 45 to 50 miles per hour.  The vibration becomes more intense as you accelerate. You may also smell a burning odor when you apply the brakes.

 

When you press on your brake pedal, the action activates a hydraulic pressure that forces small pistons inside your brake calipers to push the brake pads against the brake rotors.

 

When this happens, the friction between the brake pads and rotors generates an enormous amount of heat. As the brake rotors eventually cool down and then heat up again the next time you press on the brakes, over time this can cause them to warp slightly causing very
