The Face-Saving 'Undo Send' Feature Arrives To Gmail For Android

Nobody is perfect. Whether it's on messaging platforms, social media or Email, typos do happen from time to time. At those moments, things can go from simple laughter to viral, and even embarrassment.

One of the useful features that Gmail gained over the years is the 'Undo Send'. Just like the name suggests, the feature allows users to take back a sent email through an artificial delay. This Undo Send feature has been around on Gmail for the web, and Google is introducing it to Gmail for Android.

The feature is similar to its desktop web counterpart, as it does practically the same thing.

After users send an email, Gmail shows a Snackbar at the bottom of the screen that first notes how the message is 'Sending…', with a cancel button at the right.

Previously, Gmail only showed a 'Sending message…' toast message.

If users for whatever reasons want to take back that email, preventing Gmail from sending it, they have a few seconds to do that.

When 'Cancel' is tapped, Gmail will return users to the compose screen where they can rework their message. Nothing is sent, and no harm is done. And when sending the email to another Gmail users, the sender can still prevent the receiver from receiving the email even after Gmail has sent the email.

By hitting the 'Undo' button, Gmail will start 'Undoing…' the sending process, before returning the users to the draft of the email.

Messages to other email services reportedly experience a slight delay, which means that users can have more time in stopping the message from sending with the undo button.

One of the main advantages of using Gmail on desktop is having the ability to undo the sending of emails. When forgetting an attachment, typos, or have mistakenly add more receiver than needed, Gmail users have long-enjoyed the face-saving feature.

Google adds the Undo Send to Gmail for Android starting version 8.7 as part of a server-side update. Google also confirms the functionality on the Gmail help page.

But unlike the Undo Send on desktop, the feature on Gmail for Android doesn't have a setting to manually set the 'Send cancellation period' which is between 5 and 30 seconds.

Android’s timeout period appears to be on the shorter end of that scale.
