With 'Google Play Instant', Android Users Can Try Games And Apps Without Installing

There are a lot of Apps and games, but people may refrain from installing them due to certain reasons. Some of the causes include friction, size and time.

At the Game Developers Conference 2018 in San Francisco, Google introduced 'Google Play Instant' which taps into Android apps and games so they can be launched immediately without requiring people to install them first.

So instead of fully installing a game, which indeed will take some time and storage space, users can simply click on a "try now" link.

There’s a still a downloading process however, but it's brief. And after that, the app just runs. They’re like web pages because users can link to them. Also, if users back out of the app, it just goes away instead of leaving an icon sitting in app drawer.

In short, Google Play Instant is just like a tab on people's browsers. But unlike the web, the feature only works on Android 5.0 Lollipop or higher with Google Services.

Major game titles that are participating in the launch include Clash Royale, Words with Friends 2, Bubble Witch 3 Saga, Panda Pop and more.

Users can check out the Instant Gameplay collection on Google Play, or visit the Arcade tab in the redesigned Google Play Games app and launch any of the games in the same collection as the store.

Google's long-term goal, is to make Google Play Instant to go beyond Google Play app store. The company's vision includes people sharing links on websites or social media where they can invite friends to start playing right away. And once in the game, users can choose to install the full version if they enjoy the instant experience.

Google first unveiled the attempt back in 2016 with 'Android Instant Apps'. This allowed Android users to test a selected few apps starting January 2017. Google also opened Android Instant Apps SDK to all developers in mid-2017.

Here, Google calls the effort 'Google Play Instant' because the feature expands to go beyond normal apps, and to include games as well.

The biggest change is that Google Play Instant has a higher APK size limit (10MB as opposed to the previous 4MB). It also supports progressive download for executable code and game assets, in addition to letting developers use NDK and game engines with their existing tools.

Google is also working with Unity and Cocos2D-x to add IDE support that allows game developers to build instant apps and games.

The idea is clear and simple: Google wants to remove the friction of installing apps or games.

Initially, Google Play Instant is in closed beta, which means that not all apps and games can take advantage of the features. Google Play VP of product Tian Lim said that its very early numbers are promising: User acquisition can increase between 4 percent to 15 percent if developers add an instant option for games in the Play store.
