Google Wants To Monetize Products Searchers, And Help Businesses Compete With Amazon

As the Search engine giant of the web, Google already earns by displaying ads related to a search people made.

And here it has found a new way to monetize shopper’s queries put on its search engine.

Partnering with retailers including Target Corp, Walmart Inc, Home Depot Inc, Costco Wholesale Corp and Ulta Beauty Inc., Google allows them to link their listings to 'Google Shopping Actions' retailer loyalty program., In exchange, the retailers pay Google a piece of each purchase, which is different from payments that retailers make to place ads on Google platforms.

The program was announced by Google’s President for Retail and Shopping, Daniel Alegre, saying that Google will get a cut from each purchase from the listings in Google’s organic search listings.

Google knows that as a search engine, it can influence people's decision. Here, the company uses Google Shopping Actions to pitch retailers, and give them a better change to get on top of shoppers' purchasing decision.

With the initiative, Google allows retailers to list their products not only on Google search, but also on Google’s Express shopping service and Google Assistant on mobile and other supported devices: from desktop PCs, smartphones and smart home devices with voice search

Google Shopping Actions helps retailers to better pitch their products using whatever and whenever related query is put on Google search and other portals. This would also help the retailers in competing against Amazon.

"Where can I buy this?" "Where can I find it?" "How can I buy it?" "How do I transact?" asked Daniel Alegre, explaining how tens of millions of consumers were sending image searches of products to Google.

Mobile searches asking where to buy products have soared by 85 percent since 2016, Alegre said.

"We have taken a fundamentally different approach from the likes of Amazon because we see ourselves as an enabler of retail," explained Alegre. "We see ourselves as part of a solution for retailers to be able to drive better transactions … and get closer to the consumer."

In short, Google Shopping Actions is another big initiative from Google, which has been exploring more ways to answer questions asked on Google Search.
