Market research firm Canalys found that for the first time, more people bought Apple watches than Swiss watches.

The numbers were estimates based on market data. In Q1 2016 Apple shipped 1.5 million watches to Switzerland’s 5.9 million. In Q4 2017, Switzerland’s famed industry exported 6.8 million timepieces, according to the Federation of the Swiss Watch Industry. And Apple sold 8 million watches.

What this means, Apple smartwatches' sales have beaten Rolex, Omega, Breitling, TAG Heuer, Zenith, Blancpain, Patek Philippe, Longines, Hublot, Swatch and others - combined.

Apple in beating the whole Switzerland-made watches in Q4 2017, was mainly caused by Apple releasing its Watch 3, as well as the iPhone 8, 8 Plus and X products, just in time for the 2917 holiday shopping.

While the iPhone sales were said to be below Wall Street expectations for Q4, the watch saw impressive growth. The number represents a 32-percent jump over Q4 2016, according to Canalys’ figures, and lines up with what the company reported during its last earnings call.

"It was our best quarter ever for the Apple Watch," said CEO Tim Cook during earnings, "with over 50-percent growth in revenue and units for the fourth quarter in a row and strong double-digit growth in every geographic segment."

With Apple selling more watches than the whole Switzerland, its sales also represents the best sales of any LTE smartwatches. This achievement may or may not stay. Apple has one product while Switzerland has thousands of brands.

However, Apple is far from Samsung, which has secured its place as the first company to offer cellular connectivity on a wrist worn device.
