Sacramento gets a bad rap because it’s smaller and flatter than its more glamorous Californian counterparts. (What? You think you’re better because you have a beach?!) But the capitol actually has a lot to offer, all with a lower price tag than Los Angeles or San Francisco. The city is a perfect combination of art, nightlife, delicious local food, and great places to work—all just two hours from Lake Tahoe and less than 100 miles from the coast. Young families, millennials, and artists are recognizing the city as a great place to call home. Read on to find out which Sacramento neighborhood is right for you.
Midtown
Movers and shakers are drawn to Midtown’s food and nightlife scene. The re-gentrified area is home to shops, restaurants, and bars as well as residential Victorians, Craftsman bungalows, condos, townhomes, and mid-century modern apartment buildings. The fairly compact 13 by 22 blocks near the state capitol building are easily traversed, with alphabetized and numbered streets set up on a grid. Just steps from the Sacramento river bank and the burgeoning Downtown district, this ‘hood is fabulous if you can afford it.
Oak Park
Sacramento’s first suburb is now a hub for millennials, artists, and urban adventurers. Shop, eat, and drink in the revitalized stretch of Broadway and the developing “Oak Park Triangle”. Once home to streetcars, the Joyland amusement park, and the original California State Fair, now Oak Park is a desirable neighborhood because it is family-friendly, affordable, and full of charm.
East Sacramento
Families and nature lovers flock to East Sac for its walkable streets, bike trails, parks, and river walkways. Known for its gorgeous Rose Garden, McKinley Park is a favorite. The neighborhood fits many lifestyles and budgets, even though it has a pricey reputation, as it is home to the super-tony Fab Forties area. Can’t afford one of the million dollar mansions? Try Elmhurst or River Park, just steps from Sacramento State.
Folsom
Just east of Sacramento, the spacious foothills of Folsom welcome families in search of a good school district, parks, and outdoor fun, including 32 miles of bike trails and hiking spots. Known for Johnny Cash’s famous Folsom Prison performance, the town is also home to Folsom Lake, which makes for great boating and hiking. Bonus: Its proximity to wine country and Lake Tahoe!
Hollywood Park
Renovated homes offering updated amenities have made Hollywood Park one of the hottest neighborhoods in the US. Young families, millennials, and artists are calling the 1950s-era neighborhood just south of Midtown home because of its affordable modest-but-charming bungalows and tree-lined streets. Move here for a friendly small town vibe, good schools, and nearby William Land Park, the city’s largest park.
Downtown
Trendy apartment or condo more your style? Young professionals will enjoy living in the heart of the city, with all of its community events, farmers’ markets, live entertainment, and burgeoning food scene. Sacramento is the self-proclaimed “farm-to-fork capital” of the nation, after all. Things will be great when you’re downtown–especially if that’s where you work. Suburbanites will envy your non-existent commute!
Pocket-Greenhaven
Just south of downtown is the suburban oasis of Pocket-Greenhaven, a planned community built in the early ‘60s. The lush area boasts 15 parks and over 180 acres of green space–perfect for picnicking, biking, or strolling the scenic waterways.
Tahoe Park
Also convenient to downtown, yet more affordable, is the up-and-coming community of Tahoe Park. Young families are drawn to the area for its 19-acre park in the center of the neighborhood, for which it’s named. First time homebuyers have a variety of architectural styles to choose from. Location, location, location: This is a great spot to live for employees of nearby Sac State, UC Davis Medical Center, or the Shriner’s Children’s Hospital.
