5 Strategies For Planning A Quick & Easy Move

Editor’s note: This is a guest post By Darina Murashev

Moving is stressful, whether you’re heading just across town or clearing across the country. You may be looking forward to a fresh start in a new place, but first, you need to Pack and transport all your possessions from point A to point B. It’s a daunting mission.

While you have a lot on your mind (and your to-do list) as moving day approaches, a little bit of advanced preparation will ease your worries and keep you organized. Follow these five simple strategies to help your move be as quick and painless as possible.

1. Start Early

Procrastinating is tempting, but it will only increase your stress in the long run. You don’t want to leave everything to the last minute, causing an exhausting dash the night before the moving van arrives.

Leave more time than you think you need for each step of the moving process, and begin planning immediately. Create a master calendar, working backward from moving day and mapping out every task that needs to be completed before then. What are you most stressed about? In which areas could you use more time or help? For projects that require outside support, ask friends or reserve vendors with plenty of advance notice.

2. Downsize

Moving is the perfect opportunity to purge any unnecessary items from your home. Remember: the more you get rid of, the less you’ll have to pack. Go through every room with a discerning eye, asking tough questions about each item to decide what to keep and what to part with:

  • Do I use it?
  • Do I love it?
  • If it’s broken, will I fix it?
  • Is it worth moving?

Donate, sell, or throw away items you don’t need anymore. If you have a huge stash of clutter you want to get rid of, consider hosting a garage sale or inviting friends over to take what they want. Once you’ve downsized your belongings, the rest of your move will be more streamlined and efficient.

3. Stock Supplies

Good packing materials are crucial for a smooth and organized move. Take the time to stock up on sturdy Boxes in assorted sizes. Buy new boxes from a moving or shipping company, or seek out free boxes from friends, local stores, or websites such as Craigslist or Nextdoor. It’s a safe bet that you’ll need more boxes than you initially estimate—when in doubt, get extra.

Pick up other important packing supplies for your move:

  • Large garbage bags
  • Bubble or foam wrap
  • Kraft paper or newspaper
  • Packing tape
  • Moving labels
  • Permanent markers
  • Moving blankets or furniture covers
  • Vacuum storage bags
  • Box knives or scissors

4. Ask for Help

Moving is an overwhelming task when you try to do it on your own. Recognize when you need to bring in reinforcements. If you’re moving with a partner, family members, or roommates, divide up chores and assignments so everyone is pitching in.

Make a moving day plan, and try to anticipate how long each phase will take. If friends and family are helping you move, let them know what time you need them and for how many hours. Be sure to show your gratitude by providing snacks, drinks, and meals at regular intervals. If you’re hiring movers, do your homework and compare different moving companies before making a decision. Read their policies and reviews carefully, contacting their representatives to ask questions and verify that you’re working with a reputable company.

5. Get Organized

Do your future self a favor: be methodical in how you pack. If you haphazardly throw things into boxes, you’ll likely spend days or weeks searching for lost items when you move into your new place.

Instead, separate and pack your possessions by category or by room, and label each box with a number and a brief description. Create a basic inventory—in a spreadsheet or on a sheet of paper—that lists each box number and its contents. If you prefer visual cues, use colored stickers or markers to categorize boxes (blue for bedroom items, yellow for kitchenware, etc.). This method may seem tedious at first, but it will save you hours of frustration when you unpack, and it’s also useful for updating your renters insurance policy.

Before you get too caught up in the packing frenzy, set aside belongings you’ll need for the first few days after the move. Pack a small bag with clean clothes, toiletries, and important documents. And store essential move-in supplies, such as cleaning products, toilet paper, towels, and tools, where you can access them easily.

Getting ready for a big move is hectic, but don’t worry: you have it all under control. Follow this step-by-step moving checklist, and you’ll be celebrating in your new home in no time.
