Buying Guide: How to Choose the Right Rig

With onboard generators, spray rigs help SPF contractors arrive on a job site and working quickly. They also allow contractors to store their valuable equipment, tools, supplies, and insulation materials all in one secure place.

The style of Spray Foam rig or truck you need depends on how you plan to use it. For example, if you already own a pick-up style vehicle, then investing in a trailer makes sense.

In general, manufacturers and spray foam equipment providers tend to configure spray rigs for sale in the form of bumper-pull, spray foam trailers, gooseneck trailers, or commercial box trucks.

Here are some factors to consider during your search for the right spray rig:

How Do You Plan to Use Your Spray Rig?

In most cases, the type of applications you plan to take on should determine the size of the spray rig appropriate for your SPF business.

For instance, commercial insulation and roofing projects are commonly larger than smaller-scale, residential insulation projects. In fact, it is not uncommon to spray at least five sets of foam per day in these types of applications. Therefore, larger projects often require a more substantial box truck or trailer to allow for more storage of materials, equipment, and tools.

Typically, spray foam jobs require approximately two to three sets of foam materials to be stored inside of a rig. Many contractors say they will not commit to spraying any more than this amount of product in one workday due to various factors, including tighter workspaces and less trigger time while navigating through basements, attics, and crawlspaces.

Towable Trailers

A vast majority of spray rigs for sale today are towable. Also known as pull-along or tag-along, these trailers range from 12 to 24 feet in length. Pull-along trailers fall into two categories: gooseneck and bumper-pull.

People commonly use gooseneck trailers for heavy-duty spray foam applications. They are large and can accommodate robust application equipment; thus, you must tow them with a 3/4-ton pickup or larger.

On the other hand, bumper-pull trailers are the most common type of spray rig, and you can tow them with a half-ton pickup truck.

Some contractors prefer to buy a trailer and design the interior, themselves. While others would instead opt to invest in a trailer for a rig-builder to outfit on their behalf.

The most common option when searching for trailers is to invest in a turnkey package from a spray foam equipment provider, like Intech Equipment & Supply. Professional rig builders can advise SPF contractors on the right equipment for their line of work, helping them save a substantial amount of time and labor costs.

Box Trucks

It is common to see an SPF equipment system integrated into the rear of a box truck.

Many spray rig providers today purchase box trucks directly and customize them to apply spray foam and protective coatings.

A major benefit of using a box truck spray rig lies in its production potential. With a larger footprint than a trailer, box trucks can haul more SPF material drums. Additionally, box trucks have ample room to securely and safely store two proportioning machines, thereby doubling foam production potential.

Compact Units

In recent years, some contractors are investing in ultra-compact integrated rigs. These spray rigs feature all of the functionality of a towable trailer rig but are available at a fraction of their size.

The technology that enables a compact configuration comes from combining the major components of a spray rig: the proportioner, generator, and air compressor. This innovative combination, often referred to as an integrated proportioner, dramatically lowers the footprint of necessary equipment, allowing the compact rigs to be much smaller.

What Is The Right Spray Foam Rig Solution For Your Needs?

Every business begins with a goal. And that goal often materializes as a contractor focuses on specific types of applications, such as commercial, residential, or roofing.

To focus on one type of application can dictate how a contractor equips his Spray Foam Rig.

At Intech, we can help steer you in the best direction when it comes to choosing the right spray foam rig for your SPF business.
