RM Sotheby’s Most Expensive McLarens


When it comes to McLarens, RM Sotheby’s has a reputation for successful auctions of these wonderful automobiles. Mclaren was founded in 1963 by Bruce McLaren, specialising in luxury sports cars. Borro is taking a look at the most expensive McLarens sold by RM Sotheby’s.

  1. 1994 McLaren F1 – £1.3 million

This 1994 McLaren F1 was sold by Sotheby’s in 2006 at the Monterey auction. It has a 6.1L V12 engine and is regarded as an automotive icon, the Ferrari 250 GTO of its time. It achieved 180mph in 20.3 seconds and makes a bold statement with its bright yellow bodywork.

4) 2015 McLaren P1 – £1.5 million

This 2015 McLaren P1 was sold by RM Sotheby’s at the Monterey auction in 2015. When it went to auction it had only covered 250 miles so was still pretty new to the road, with only one previous owner. There are 374 others just like this, but is still rarer than the Porsche 918.

3) 1974 McLaren M16C Indianapolis – £2.8 million

This 1974 McLaren M16C Indianapolis sold for £2.8 million in 2013 at the RM Sotheby’s Monterey auction. It’s got a competitive history being the winner of the 1974 Indianapolis 500 by Johnny Rutherford, making it the first of his three Indy 500 wins.

2) 1997 McLaren F1 – £2.5 million

This 1997 McLaren F1 sold for £2.5 million by RM Sotheby’s in 2008 at the Automobiles of London auction. It has a 6L engine and is just one of ten that have been built. It is often referred to as the “Longtail” due to the extended bodywork at the rear of the car.

1) 1998 McLaren F1 LM hyper car – £9 million

At the RM Sotheby’s Pebble Beach auction in 2015, this McLaren F1 sold for a hefty £9 million making it one of the most expensive McLarens sold. It is one of only a handful of McLaren F1 LM cars built. Is has a 6.1L V-12 engine with 691 horsepower. It can reach 60mph in just under 4 seconds, with a top speed of 225mph.
